Looking forward to the next Democratic Administration under whose leadership we can expect to find the catering cart Trump cowered in as part of a major new display at the Smithsonian on "Corruption and Cowardice in the U.S. Presidency."

We don't have to accept this, but it is also sadly the case that we can't just fix this under the table with budget rules. But there's nothing stopping local governments from passing rules banning their use. And if preempted by the state lege, mayors can fire* police chiefs who let cops use them.

In many cities, local cops have extra funding for surveillance from wealthy private donors, police foundations, and federal grants; surveillance companies also often offer police free trials and help with applying for grants and waivers. Those surveillance firms have expanded from offering singular technologies such as ALPRs or body-worn cameras to become one-stop shops for police seeking the latest surveillance setup — including advanced drones.

I suspect those who've speculated are right. Trump went ballistic on round one of the QatarForce One story because underneath it was this pretty humiliating episode of Trump getting smuggled out of Turkey in a food cart. And he'd do anything to stop that from getting out.
