I have been alternately reading and listening to Emily Wilson's Odyssey translation. The audiobook is read (beautifully) by Claire Danes, but if you play it at 1.2x, she somehow becomes Claire Danes in Homeland.
It was absolutely worth it to see a Sunday afternoon matinee of Gregg Araki's 'I Want Your Sex'.
I'm only just now realizing at a quarter to 1am that I'm not at all sleepy because I inexplicably had four cups of coffee today.
There's a certain joy I feel when asked a question to which I don't know the answer and instead of dancing around, I honestly respond "I cannot speak to that; I do not know the answer to that question." No lies, no playing to amuse, no leading astray for pleasantries' sake.
I will always respect the Henry Threadgill rule-- you can get away with anything musically if the beat is good.
Our brains are so used to “hot takes” and the “everyone who disagrees with me is evil” of social media that we think a well thought-out and well-written critique of a massively successful blockbuster movie is an attack
Seeing the backlash to the Wilson LRB review makes me wonder... Do all of you really think Nolan *can* write dialogue?
I find it odd how often I have to remind my white co-workers of the highly-important Black rubric of "who all gon' be there?" as a determining factor.
We had moderates. They gave us decades of disastrous foreign policy, eviscerated social safety nets, soaring inequality, privatization, managed decline, and a party so terrified of confrontation that it treated rising fascism as a messaging problem instead of an existential threat.
We are witnessing MAGA equivalent of destruction of Democratic Party through election of progressive Socialists. If you think this ends well for country, I believe you're sadly mistaken. Extremism on one side simply fuels opposite growth on other side. We need moderates.
It's a really incredible read. Emily Wilson is fantastic and this was a delight to pore over for the last hour.

As they say at the awards shows, I was humbled to learn that Christopher Nolan has read at least the first line of my...

Emily is channeling a LOT to academic rage at our impotence.
there's the principle of charity and there's being a mark and if trying to sort out the difference in practice scares you then I've got an amazing investment opportunity for you
As the clock passed midnight and I realized it is now the two-year anniversary of my moving to Portland, I found myself at a strip club, something supposedly typical of this city. Once again, I find myself not getting it.
Just realized that last week, because I didn't pass a Tesla dealership on my way to work everyday while I was on my vacation, said vacation has now significantly improved retrospectively.
Today wasn't great, but I didn't see a single cybertruck. It's important to appreciate the little things.
I probably slept 4 1/2 hours last night and I'm DJing tonight until midnight, so I most certainly am preparing tomorrow's radio show now so I can just roll in to work tomorrow and talk, having already worried about the curation.
I'm a weird-ass teapot, Tall and thin, Pour some water in me, And pour it out again
I don't know what OP is talking about. Seems cool to me.
You want me to WHAT? You might wanna take another pass on that headline.
Just remembered I have one more DJ gig this month... and it's this Thursday night. Portland, roll through Hey Love at SE 9th & Burnside this Thursday night (the 23rd) from 8pm - Midnight and catch @headnodic.bsky.social & I on the decks.
Watch Okonski tickle the keys of our Fender Rhodes as he performs his song "October" live at the KMHD studios
Tipping is not meant to incentivize a good service. Tipping originated as a way for southern business owners, particularly in the food, service industry, to avoid having to pay the minimum wage to Black employees.
Apparently, we're arguing about tipping again, so I'll repeat what I always say: if you're in a culture that tips, you tip. Your theoretical economic reform theory has no bearing on the present reality, and when you use it as an excuse for not tipping, you tell people what a dick you are. 1/2
I spent last week on the Coast and this is entirely accurate. I walked so many beaches wondering why I was so damn cold.
Better half’s verdict on the Oregon coast so far: it’s like if Hawaii was in Scotland.
It's legit hilarious that they're selling Trojan Horse popcorn holders for THE ODYSSEY (2026), given how the Trojan Horse ends up being framed in the film as the genocidal nail in the coffin of a rules-based international order
Realizing I'm not doing any Pride events because, as with all the other ones, I'm bad at holidays.
Few things give me anxiety in quite the same flavor than my perpetually-single behind trying to figure out what to do with a +1 to a thing.
