Lots of site visits today, William's Hill Motte and Bailey, Jervaulx Abbey and Wensley Roman Fort in Wensleydale and Scawton Manorial site in the North York Moors National Park.

Large earthwork mound covered in parched yellowing grass, with the grey stone ruins of Middleham Castle in the distance, under cloudy skies. Crumbling stone ruins of Jervaulx Abbey under cloudy skies. Parched grass and a red bench in the foreground, the ruins are flanked by vegetation.Scawton Chapel, rubbls stone built with a slate roof and small wooden tower. Blue skies above with thin whote clouds and a green grass foreground. The stone ruins of Middleham Castle viewed at distance, under cloudy skies. The rolling hills and fields of Wensleydale stretch into the distance

Somewhere in here, apparently, are a few hoofprints of Dartmoor's Bronze Age horses, amongst mainly cattle and sheep, on the base of the Saddlesborough reave ditch on Shaugh Moor. A 14C date of 1590±80 bc looks older than the currently accepted date range for the reaves - still can't get to 4500 BP!

Whatever the truth about potential impacts of current policy decisions the assertion that “Dartmoor hill ponies have been on the landscape for 4,500 years” seems dubious - is there archaeological evidence they’ve been there that long?
