Happy to announce Octane â the successor to Inferno. Reactâs programming model, compiled. Hooks, Suspense and Actions, compiled ahead of time. No virtual DOM. No Rules of Hooks. No manually maintained dependency arrays. The compiler understands what your code. octanejs.dev
Everything is on fire, but I just saw one of these drinking from the pond. We cannot let the fascists destroy our world.
I have no idea what happened, but this old article I wrote has gone absolutely nuts on Google Search today. Over 1,000 referrals from Google already this morning. www.aaronrosspowell.com/3m2zggtugcc2f
Substack Doesn't Want You to Leave
Substack's business model is unsustainableâunless they lock all their writers in.

Watching the way the maintainers have managed the project and how they interact with the community. There's a lot of effort around cultivating and developing skills, both hard and soft. Focus on humans over code. Hard to quantify in some ways, but you feel it.
one time i wrote a post about how AI could never replicate the human experience of writing and someone accused me of using AI to write it, like as a bit, and anyway AI is cooking all of our brains and @jasonkoebler.bsky.social says it so well here:
Your AI Use Is Breaking My Brain
AI writing is impossible to avoid, is making everything sound the same, and is driving us crazy.

I wrote about why I quit my job, and how weird and tiring tech feels these days.
Do I belong in tech anymore?
On quitting, the spread of AI, and the loss of an ideal.

One of the fun things about playing with the new HTML-in-Canvas API is that it lets me revisit all sorts of cool ideas Iâve seen in the past and wished I could implement on native elements. Like this one, based on Paola Demichelis article from about a year ago. (Links đ)

People who are against taxing the rich seem to be unaware of who the rich really are. They hear this and think that it's local business owners who have nice houses and retire early. The single most effective message we have is to lay out the numbers in front of them.
This may be the greatest strength of the ATmosphere community. I've just been curious about how it works, what to build on atproto and each website talking about is fascinating.
Also, I don't know if it's the air in Canada or simply the ethos of people of the ATmosphere but everybody is very humble, welcoming and approachableâit feels more like a bunch of nice and nerdy fellows being happy to talk about their favorite thing, than a startup meetup with dudes trying to shine

The nicest article about JPEG compression, by @sophielwang.bsky.social The moment there are color stats involved, Iâm in. Itâs so well done it makes me think we need some kind of online library where articles like this get preserved. www.sophielwang.com/blog/jpeg
Another month, another course from Michael BallĂ©, a French lean sensei on management. April was about being a good team leader. This month: solving problems. Sounds obvious. Everyone wants to solve problems and be more efficient â but at work, inertia feels endless.
