Just discovered that the ITV Drama YouTube channel are uploading episodes of Cadfael (they've done the same with Hornblower and Sharpe). Why yes, I will watch Derek Jacobi roaming around Shrewsbury in the middle of Stephen and Matilda's civil war.

Funny how fewer academic and support staff never seems to result in fewer senior management posts being needed to oversee a depleted workforce. I’m sure creating some kind of causal link, like oh decimation (posts, not lives - for clarification!), would curb their enthusiasm

I really hope that someone from the Leverhulme Trust (which funds this project) has had words with Exeter’s management

As a curator of digital and physical data, as well as a creator of data this is so important and a much overlooked and utterly poorly funded. Making HERs statutory as intended by the inacted statutes of LURA would be a good and easy starting point

A blast from the past eh @historyjo.bsky.social? Our first dig and my longest single site contract back in the 80s. Literally a javelin's throw from where we were working on the adjacent defences. All the opportunities that opened up for me in archaeology lead back to the experience I gained here.

Recreation of the gate to the Roman fort at Manchester on the site of the original. A bit of a hidden secret in one of my favourite cities.

I’m not a climate scientist, but I’m an archaeologist with a deep appreciation of how we move through landscapes surrounded by the evidence left by previous generations who managed to not utterly trash our entire planet. Our legacy to those who follow us should be better than this.

Wildfires are raging – and the world has junked 45 climate pledges. Disaster looms, and little wonder | Bill McGuire

Five years ago, I wrote an open letter asking climate scientists to speak out. Now governments are in retreat, it is surely time to act, says climate professor Bill McGuire
