It's genuinely baffling how many straight up WEAPONS we were comfortable handing a 5 year old child for Christmas back in the 80s-90s. Not pictured- the whittling knife, the toy army gear set, the toy katana, the totally not a toy slingshot...

Current me holding a photo of then me @5 years old with a BB rifle.

Y'boy, sharpening sticks. (Mom handed me two stacks of my childhood, first house when we returned to Alaska, and the original build-out of the A-frame dry cabin I'm currently trying to bring back online.) (I'm thoroughly distracted by this little trip through memory lane)

A 5 year old sitting along an old beam in the woods in autumn, an axe stuck in a splitting stump nearby. He's got a knife and a stick that he's carving.Closer cropped second photo, where he's aware he's being photographed

Two photos of Raven the cat from 1991, and It's hard to remember her so little- She would go on to be one of the most prolific vole hunters in the game, and fearless in the face of dogs or danger. Her summers were her own, returning precisely on Halloween night, pregnant, for over a decade running

It’s hard to explain but tv was better when you couldn’t watch the show you wanted whenever you wanted to watch it and most of the shows were worse and the TVs were worse and the entire experience was worse, that’s when it was better

Being able to power up the steam deck, hit 3 buttons and be in a linux desktop environment is an experience that is absolutely lost on the incurious bastards who don't have any appreciation for the gifted era of technology they live in. Skeet.
