Lover of travel, history, academia, etc. My opinions are my own and can be abrasive, especially when discussing the current hellscape that is American/global politics.

The effective federal corporate income tax rate: 1950: 50% 1990: 25% 2020: 13% Stop asking "but how we will pay for it?" Restore the corporate tax rate. That is how we will pay for it.

Israeli airstrikes bombed medical warehouses near Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, early Saturday 1 August. The strikes destroyed at least half of the facilities and extensively damaged nearby tents sheltering displaced Palestinians, witnesses said.

We aren’t Great… If America is the greatest country in the world... Why are millions afraid to call an ambulance? Why do people ration insulin? Why do families hold bake sales to pay for chemotherapy? Those aren't signs of greatness. They're signs that something is fundamentally broken.

The diarrhea lettuce company, Taylor Farms, uses slave labor contracted from the Arizona Dept. of Corrections. The backbreaking labor is often performed by imprisoned Mexican nationals who would be otherwise ineligble to work in the US. They are paid $1.50 an hour.

The Diarrhea Lettuce Company Has Been Linked to Forced Labor

The lettuce-producing Taylor Farms was linked to the widespread use of prison labor before its involvement in a cyclospora outbreak.

It’s a Fair Question….. “Why is it that it takes 900 years and 5000 impact studies to build high speed rail but a 5 minute city council meeting is all it takes to approve a massive data center?”

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money, emissions, pollution, noise etc. Choices. Simple.

Graphic showing a 9 m wide track for metros can move as many people as a 175 m wide, 7 lane road for cars.

Israel is expelling surviving Palestinians from Gaza and the world remains silent Israel already controls nearly 70% of Gaza's territory. They are systematically displacing the Palestinian population that still survives among the ruins. The major media barely mention it

the whole "women's sports exist to protect women from men" framing is hilarious, given that a lot of these divisions were initially formed because men were deeply embarrassed any time a woman beat them at a sport olympic shooting was mixed gender right up until a woman won the gold

DATA CENTERS: THE TRUTH "A big employer who uses the water of 50,000 people - which only hires about ten people - is not an employer. They are an extraction."

Dear Everyone, Please be sure to note in reporting on Iran’s attacks in Jordan, Qatar, and Bahrain, etc, that these attacks are ON AMERICAN MILITARY INFRASTRUCTURE. 🙏🏼 Those nations and our troops are being violently assaulted because of OUR gov’t mismanagement

Despite their oversight role, FCC members have accepted pricey gala tickets from CBS or its parent company, now Paramount. Seven of the 10 commissioners who served since 2016 accepted tickets worth more than $260,000, ProPublica found.

FCC Officials Took Pricey Gifts From Paramount as the Company Needed Approval for Billion-Dollar Deals

Accepting tickets to the Kennedy Center honors gala compromised the commissioners’ impartiality, ethics experts told ProPublica. FCC Chair Brendan Carr has been gifted at least $63,000 worth of ticket...

Italy just sent 32 people to prison for killing 43 people in 2018 with a dodgy bridge. In the UK 0 people are in prison or even on trial for killing 72 people with illegal cladding in 2016.

I think one reason data center outrage is so pronounced is people spent decades recycling and composting and otherwise scrimping to offset energy use and protect clean water, and the second we hit an inflection point for cheap electricity the banking industry said we’re taking all of it, fuck you
