Amazing that this review paper from 2021 just became my most cited paper of my 30+ yr career. I am honored to have been the lead first co-corresponding author with @ChiaWang8. COVID is indeed airborne--as are most other respiratory viruses. @ucsandiego.bsky.social www.science.org/doi/full/10....

Airborne transmission of respiratory viruses

A Review discusses the scientific basis of and factors controlling airborne transmission of respiratory viruses including coronavirus.

Yesterday, history happened at the UN: For the first time hundreds of orgs signed a global pledge declaring that healthy indoor air is a human right. Healthy indoor air is a key tool for preventing pandemics, building climate resilience, and increasing health equity. We need it everywhere!

People signing the Global Pledge for Healthy Indoor Air at the UN

“We are told by leaders that we are the future. But when it comes to the ongoing pandemic, our present is being stolen right in front of our eyes.” Incredible speech by Violet Affleck who warned about the ongoing dangers of COVID & Long Covid, & advocated for masks and clean air at the UN today!

If you want to resist, wear a mask If you care about future generations, wear a mask If you care about your long term health, wear a mask If you want to fight fascism, wear a mask Your resistance effort must be inclusive of everyone … and that includes disabled people Masking is community care

Thing is, subclinical—or “under the hood” or invisible—damage from repeat COVID infections won’t be apparent until…it’s apparent. That could be a few years from now. #MaskUp and protect yourself—regardless of how few others are.

PSA: There’s a difference between wearing a mask or respirator & wearing a gaiter or face covering to disguise identity. It’s important to discern & communicate this nuance because if you don’t, you might encourage elected officials to ban masks for everyone, which would be a public health disaster.

Masks are under serious threat at being banned widely due to politicization. This would be a public health disaster. If you are only wearing a mask at protests, please consider also wearing them elsewhere. The more people mask, the more we normalize masks and protect them against bans.

Aren't you tired of being sick and tired? COVID-19 isn't just another cold. It can cause lasting harm even without symptoms. We have the power to break this cycle. Wearing a high-quality mask in public drastically reduces infections, protecting you and your community.

Please ignore tired pieces in publications like the Atlantic that are still trying to stigmatize mask wearing. Wearing a mask to prevent sickness from airborne viruses is a science-informed position, and it has been that way for over 100 years.

Re mask bans: sunglasses conceal people's identity more effectively than masks do, but everyone would object to a sunglasses ban. The difference is that sunglasses are completely normalized accessibility devices, while masks have been pathologized as part of the total erasure of the pandemic.
