While the virology in this article is interesting, there are fundamental issues in the underlying assuptions made by the authors. This research group believes that deep lung fluid is identical to Hanks Balanced Salt Solution. What this means is that the pH dynamics of the aerosol are incorrect.

Aerosols are very small, have a high surface to volume ratio and can readily reach super saturation. This combination makes them a unique environment for chemical reactions. We had a paper published in JACS that looked into the rate of chemical reactions within and on aerosols.

It was a great honour to be part of the PERFORM team that was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry 2025 Faraday Horizon Prize for advances in understanding the physicochemical properties of exhaled aerosol and their impact on the transmissibility of respiratory pathogens.
CO2 monitors are great for estimating both air quality and the risk airborne disease transmission in a given space. A study just came out comparing the top of the line Aranet with a low cost alternative (Vitalight). Turns out they work just as well in typical environments.
