It's Family Day here, and my office is close to a window looking out on the atrium where various spacecraft models are hanging. People are taking their kids to the window and describing the models. One excited child asked "The Van Alien Probes?" which has a whole different vibe than the real thing.

Earlier today, the discarded upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket impacted on the Moon. As part of a coordinated observing campaign, our Very Large Telescope detected spectral lines of sodium and lithium gas in the impact plume lasting for 5-10 minutes after impact. 🔭 🧪 📷 ESO/C. Schmidt et al. 1/4
I plan to record a duet of a Gedankenband song with Taylor Swift.

Lots of additional great answers to this pointing to various things, so I'll give weather forecasting a shout out. It's not perfect, and it's a really complicated problem, but particularly in terms of near-term and hyper-local forecasting we are _far_ far ahead of what was possible in the 80s.
Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.
Today is the 60th anniversary of Revolver's release. The album I grew up with, of course, had the US tracklist and so was missing two of my very favorite Beatles tracks (And Your Bird Can Sing and I'm Only Sleeping). But both versions had this iconic offering, so that's what I'll post:

I saw a short video today on the importance of Al Reach and his sporting goods business. It started off good before going off a cliff, stating that his company dated to 1874 and that he bought the Worcester (NL) franchise and moving them to Philadelphia. Let's fix that and do a deep dive.
Until proven otherwise, I'm assuming it was the Secret Service agent tasked with helping Trump cheat at golf.
Law enforcement officials say they arrested a “suspicious” armed person at President Trump’s golf course in the Los Angeles area ahead of Trump’s Tuesday fundraiser there.
Gotta say, I hadn't fully internalized that I was such a catch. (Sorry ladies, I'm taken)
thankfully today many women are realizing you don’t have to let a man with an unwashed ass live in your house or indeed, interact with you at all

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

The stars do seem to be aligning for a Science Diet reunion at the Spokane DPS. Consider this your fair warning.
For those of you who care about this sort of thing, all four of the members of Science Diet are likely to be in Spokane for this meeting. Could an Open Mic Night reunion be in the offing?
You'd have to think that whoever it was has got to have something like 30-45 pounds of copper and 15-30 grams of gold now, at a minimum?
the cameras are known to just disappear like that at times, ya know

Look, yesterday was the 47th anniversary of Thurman Munson's death. I'm disappointed in what the Yankees didn't get done at the Trade Deadline, but I've seen days that were 1000 fucking times worse for a Yankees fan, thank you very much.
Alec Burleson has a two-homer game in the Bronx, as if today couldn't get worse for Yankees fans
Yankees handled this trade deadline with the kind of urgency that suggests they think the 2026 World Series will be followed by Spring Training 2031.
The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired outfielder Heliot Ramos from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for minor league infielder Kaeden Kent and left-handed pitcher Henry Lalane.
51 years ago I painted a trio of Viking related works for NASA HQ including the widely reproduced one of the landing on Mars. I have reimagined the Landing portrayal in updated form using digital methods of visualization and painting. I chose the same angle but with reality replacing anticipation.
I cannot hate the Dodgers for doing what the Yankees should have spent the last 20 years doing: not just *being* but *acting* both smart and rich at the same time. Count me among those who think the franchises ruining baseball are those whose aspirations go no further than a Wild Card spot.
