transmogrified woman, labile, artist in mathematics and vice versa, low-grade dancer, survivor of Bad Things, just as fucked up as they say
by the way, metro vancouver people, if you want to see my solo dance/painting/music work on friday august 21, 7pm, at What Lab, here's the event page: whatlab.ca/july-project...
What Lab -
What Lab is an East Vancouver institution that supports artists and art-curious communities by providing a safe place to risk failure in creating, deepening, and sharing their artistic passions.

beginning to think that, overall, boat neck is the most flattering on me (going even further to off-the-shoulder is wonderful too but drastically less practical in every garment i have tried)
working-class Downriver autoworker suburbs overwhelmingly nominating a progressive trans woman to represent them, you love to see it
after two days of trying to go without my big ass purse and just adding the things i need from it to my backpack, the forgetting at least one thing, i give up. purse is mandatory.
tfw a research article discussing the sad underrepresentation of trans and gender-nonconforming people in dance (and barriers in our way) interviews ten such dancers for their experiences, but notes every single one of them is trans masc highlighting the even scarcer presence of trans women 🥺
A Gap in the Narrative: Exploring the Experiences of Trans Dancers Today
The scarcity of trans dancers in dance history, dance spaces, and dance research suggests a need for greater understanding of this group and how their needs are and are not being met in dance. This qu...

it occurs to me this morning that trans masc people are relatively commonplace in contemporary dance spaces, while trans women are exceedingly rare, and especially with my ungendered first name i could easily imagine someone thinking i’m transitioning the other way and am hoping for he/him 😂
just over 300 hours until i meet my surgeon over video, not that i’m counting down the hours or anything haha
hmm the top and the shorts i had intended for my performance don’t go together as well as i had hoped… now suddenly considering sewing my own (perhaps tomorrow buying fabric which matches the top, which i like)
i have auditioned so many possible dance outfits for tomorrow, settled on something simple in black (bike shorts and an asymmetric boat neck tank), and will do my utmost with makeup and hair in the morning
actually, when i'm in contact lenses, a minidress is even worse. maybe i should just lean into masc tomorrow since it feels so hopeless anyhow
going off the grid? the thing that killed all those cyclists in tron?? no thank you
this account is proud to be a cishet ally ally 🌈🌈 you accidentally misgendered me? don’t worry boo, i’ll comfort you and get you through it.
“you see we don’t invest in women because we don’t give a shit about women therefore any potential investment we made in someone we treated like shit as a child because we they didn’t fit into our model what we think boys are shouldn’t be allowed to go to the girls”
i was just thinking yesterday about how after my own book was scraped for llm’s to approximate, i really have lost all motivation to write the third edition with all that new material i have worked on for a decade or more
I hate this timeline & that I had to write this essay. I hate AI companies & LLMs & the randos who are now using "AI detectors" (also AI!) to smear authors they dislike: on Medium (friend link): juliaserano.medium.com/on-em-dashes... & Substack (no paywall): juliaserano.substack.com/p/on-em-dash...
don’t overthink it, she told herself for the thirty seventh time in a row, with ever increasing urgency
my favourite dance person was an invited choreographer in rome earlier this year, and her hot take is: the government should subsidize $1 espresso (to stay only) at local neighbourhood shops that then are a hub where the entire community sees each other every morning and everyone has a better life
the air is fine in vancouver atm but there is smoke above and to the north
women who are at least slightly taller than all the men around them are a gift to the world
live your life so that when they name a pop culture law after you, it’s not a warning message
modern medicine should only work if you're pure of heart
pet peeve: people going on about the music of js bach so “mathematical” and precise yada yada yes he worked within some pretty strict forms at times — various species of canon especially — but that also describes the large majority of known dead composers! meanwhile, look up what “baroque” means…

this may sound silly, but aside from considerable mental illness issues i didn’t go to any kind of art school and have barely ever publicly shared artistic stuff in person, so it’s still a HUGE deal to hear a room full of artists last night tell me my stuff is good, actually ☺️
i opened up the collar of this lace top so i can wear it comfortably (though it’s still hard getting it on and off!)
with a little effort in Dorico and then mixing in Cubase, the synthesized string quartet sound isn't awful... my motivation to try to record myself playing is rapidly dwindling 😂
