Are you one of the 69% of Vancouver residents (63% Metro) who wanted Granville Street to STAY a pedestrian zone & people-place after the #WorldCup ends? WEEK ONE of the 7-week extension starts TOMORROW, with emphasis on day-time & families. JUST BEING ON THE STREET SUPPORTS ITS SUCCESS! Come see!

How will a pedestrianized Granville Street during the #WorldCup quickly evolve into a successful people-place EVERY day? This week I’ve started advising the very impressive @downtownvan.bsky.social leadership team planning the 7 week extension directed by City Council last Thursday. Challenging!

Photo of Granville Street in downtown Vancouver transformed into a pedestrianized people-place during the #FIFA World Cup, willed with people. Closed to vehicles, open to people. Vancouver. The 7-weeks extension until the end of the summer can continue elements of the WC-oriented design emphasis, while integrating new, different, family-oriented ideas that will make the street vibrant and successful every day, without the “jet fuel” of the World Cup.

"If governments spend public money buying up unsold inventory anyway, why not decommodify the units permanently...Instead, they could use this leverage to seed community land trusts, where local non-profits own property for co-ops, supportive housing or affordable rentals." @ayan604.bsky.social
