Public office as a façade, while behind the scenes they were involved in deals and schemes involving private companies and subsidies. Once they realized they could get away with it, they sought more power and less democracy. We should take political integrity and anti-corruption more seriously.

As Czech PM Andrej Babiš grew closer to Viktor Orbán, his Agrofert empire expanded in Hungary and Romania. It received billions in loans from a bank co-owned by the Hungarian state and Orbán’s childhood friend, and bought into a firm tied to Orbán allies.

APPLEBAUM: I live in Poland. I've lived here on and off for 30 years. I was here during period of NATO expansion. I can tell you that NATO expanded because countries in this part of Europe felt physically threatened by Russia. They asked to be part of NATO, even had to beg and plead to be let in.

Two GERBERA drones were found in Romania’s Exclusive Economic Zone in the Black Sea, approximately 90 nautical miles from Constanța, right next to the major offshore gas project Neptun Deep. The drones were detonated this afternoon.

The Kremlin’s idea of a ‘civilised diplomatic dialogue’ consists of occupying over 12% of Moldova’s territory, routinely violating its airspace with drones and missiles, and refusing to respect Moldova’s sovereignty, independence and right to determine its own future.

⚡️ Italian forces board sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker. On August 2, Italian forces boarded the EU-sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker Toa Payoh in the Mediterranean Sea after its captain refused to cooperate with an inspection.

Ian Brzezinski: Putin is beginning to feel internal pressure because of his war. Russian polling indicates growing frustration. He's having problems on the front. His war economy is being hit hard by Ukrainian long-range strikes.

KASPAROV: I would probably bet that in 10 years, hopefully sooner, Russia will not exist in its current borders. People ask me, "Do you want Russia to collapse?" It's not what I want or not. It's going to happen.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defense, another drone entered Romanian airspace this morning, though only briefly. This is the 4th consecutive day that a russian drone has entered Romanian airspace. The first 3 were shot down. It seems like they’re testing our response time.

Romania shot down a Russian drone again today for the third day in a row! Russia’s ambassador to Bucharest was summoned by the Foreign Ministry following the repeated violations of national airspace in recent days.

The audacity! The Iranians supplied enormous quantities of drones and know-how that the Russians have used to strike Ukraine for years, yet now they're outraged by Ukraine's response. They’d better be careful not to anger the Ukrainians. Their refineries might be worth worrying about.

Iran condemned a Ukrainian strike on Caspian Sea vessels (Port Olya 2 and Begey), asserting its right to defend national interests. Following the statement, pro-Iranian media published a map threatening Ukraine with Khorramshahr-4 ballistic missiles. www.kyivpost.com/post/81090

With each sanctions package, pro-Kremlin outlets react with renewed outrage at the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while carefully avoiding any mention of the invasion itself.

I welcome the agreement on the 21st sanctions package against Russia. At a time when Ukraine has built military momentum, our sanctions continue to weaken the economic foundations of Russia’s war effort. We’re adding 32 more Russian banks to our transaction ban list.

European airspace has once again been violated by a drone incursion. I commend the Romanian military for their swift and effective response, safeguarding our shared security. Strengthening defence and deterrence along our Eastern border remains a top priority.

The decision to shoot down the drone was made by NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) Torrejón. I’m glad Romania has finally taken this step. After dozens of Russian drones have violated Romanian airspace, this is the first one that Romania has actually shot down.

A Romanian F-16 has shot down a drone that entered the country’s airspace, marking Romania’s first aerial interception of its kind since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Dissent Across Borders: Russian Human Rights Organizations in Exile

Rather than suffering practical extinction, Russian human rights groups have transformed themselves under the Kremlin's repressive policies.

For years, the Kremlin warned that sanctions would leave Europe without energy.    Today, fuel restrictions affect dozens of Russian regions, with queues for gas becoming the new norm.  Reality has a habit of challenging predictions.
