I design experiences, and vote for the climate in every election. Big fan of #bioswales. Snark with a smattering of earnestness. Views don't reflect those I work with. https://james.nisbet.nz
Taking my time to really listen and learn from the very valid concerns of the MAHA movement:
we should hear MAHA out about this they might be onto something
"Labour...said the party would release an AI policy...wanted regulations ensuring that data centre operators “be legally required to underwrite new renewable electricity generation so they do not add scarcity or push up power and resource costs for households” #nzpol thespinoff.co.nz/politics/05-...
If AI is about to upend everything, where’s all the AI policy?
So far, the only party to release any AI policy for the 2026 election is the Greens.

The Government has decided not to ban the public sale of fireworks, outraging the SPCA and prompting one coalition partner to promise that will change after the election.

Both par for the course and absolutely disgusting. It should be a lasting shame on us as a country that Peters has for 40 years made a political career out of peddling this sort of crap to the bigots receptive to it.
Winston Peters launches tirade against Chinese-Kiwi Green MP
“This is called democracy, unlike what you're used to. So go back to where you come from, you loud mouth, and maybe you'll learn something,” Peters said.

Here's another thing: older people in particular are being trained by their family not to respond to scams or unexpected messages. This is an unexpected prompt requesting a highly valuable code. You can find a dozen examples of people afraid of this prompt on Reddit. UX matters.
Hey @signal.org can you be in charge of explaining how to find and then enter a SIXTY FOUR character recovery key to my elderly mother in law? Requiring users to enter this periodically to "remember it" is an unbelievably stupid piece of UX. I'd literally rather lose my backups

TIL: the Apple iPhone car crash detection feature automatically sends a notification and precise location to the police, and they promptly send an officer out. Pretty awesome! The officer I spoke to though said unfortunately lots of false positives from people leaving their phones on the roof 😬
If the people you are paying to write a curriculum need to use "AI tools" to "check and generate content", you are paying the wrong people and you should actually not have dumped the people who are capable of these core tasks.

Very cool that Shopify’s CEO thinks the poor should have far less of a vote than the rich. Still worth that ad read money, folks?
Donald Trump has earned more money in his first and second year, in his second term as president, than in the previous 60 years of his life, per Bloomberg.
Gotta admire (derogatory) how this administration is not afraid to show to the whole world how fucking stupid they are.
In a rare bit of non-Iran-related AI slop, Trump just posted this image of an “air filter barrier” between the US and Canada

I really really love this little anecdote. It demonstrates the power of having someone truly listen to you, and being there to say the right thing at the right time. Therapy rules if you can afford it, but if you can't, try to find someone to truly, *actively* listen to you.
This concept was introduced to me as "run the dishwasher twice" and was an important part of my executive functioning recovery as well as my path to self-acceptance.
"Do the thing you can do instead of beating yourself up over not doing the thing you're not doing" is honestly life-changing, even life-saving, advice.

To me cutting USAID is like, you put a quarter into a slot every day to keep millions of people alive. You don’t have to do it but it causes you no hardship. Then one day the job falls to people who are overtly white supremacist and they decide to stop doing it. It is most obviously murder
Gross to see a senator skip over the part where the aid was cut off illegally and without warning. Cooking their brains on a right wing owned social media site.
Feels like groundhog day repeatedly catching LLMs reimplementing the same code in slightly different ways all over the place It's not DRY it's WET (write everything thrice) To teach it a lesson I had it generate another acronym for its behaviour - DAMP: Don't Abstain, Multiply Paste 🤦
