25. “Crimson and Clover” by Joan Jett I dig the psychedelic pop sound of Tommy James and the Shondells. “Ball of Fire” was on the long list of songs that had to be whittled down for this list, and I prefer their original versions of “I Think We’re Alone Now” and “Mony Mony”.

26. “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” by The Jacksons I say I can separate the art from the artist. I say that, but it’s frequently untrue. I’m never going to watch The Usual Suspects or Bill Cosby Himself again because it would make me feel dirty. The bad kind of dirty.

27. “Pretty Pathetic” by Smoking Popes The guys who would become my roommates sophomore year of college turned me on to the Smoking Popes’ album Destination Failure.

28. “Only the Good Die Young” by Melissa Etheridge (Billy Joel cover) When it comes to songs about begging for sex, Meatloaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” is probably king, but Billy Joel’s “Only the Good Die Young” has always held a special place in my heart.

29. “Why is it Taking So Long” by George Scott This is a bit of an oddity. I don’t remember when or where I first heard the album Find Someone to Love, and my very superficial internet “research” had yielded almost nothing about the singer George Scott.

30. “Motion Sickness” by Phoebe Bridgers Around 2021, I got into a lot of female and queer alternafolk artists. As the government and societal institutions grew increasingly hostile toward these communities, it felt like women had a lot more to say musically.

31. “Something He Can Feel” by Aretha Franklin The first version of this song I heard was by En Vogue in the ‘90s, and for a long time I didn’t know it was a cover. If I never found out that Aretha Franklin did the song first, there’s a real chance that En Vogue’s version would’ve made this list.

32. “Wolf Like Me” by TV On the Radio I’m annoyed, because I only found out three days ago that this song is in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Now it looks like the movie inspired this pick or I’m bandwagon jumping or whatever,
