August Spies was one of the "moderate" anarchists, the editor of a newspaper whose title translated simply to Worker's Paper. He worked 12-16 hours a day on that newspaper, fighting for the eight hour day for everyone else. He kept a circle bomb on his desk in the office.

Louis Lingg was the youngest haymarket defendant. He had a watertight alibi: he couldn't have thrown the bomb, because he'd been at home with his friends making bombs. He spoke to the court with nothing but contempt. He told them:

Happy May Day! We are of a proud legacy. Every state in the world has tried to erase that legacy, but we are still here.

Sam Fielden gave the speech that was used to justify the police crackdown at the first May Day rally in 1886. He was a weaver and a stone-cutter, who'd started working at 8 years old in England. He'd been a Methodist preacher, who moved to the US south to preach in support of Black rights.

Oscar Neebe was the only haymarket defendant who wasn't sentenced to death for the crime of working for an anarchist newspaper. He was also one of the only American-born defendants. He said to the court that he wished to be hanged alongside his comrades.

Adolph Fischer was hanged for the crime of editing an anarchist newspaper. He told the court: "I was tried here in this room for murder, and I was convicted of Anarchy. I protest against being sentenced to death, because I have not been found guilty of murder.

George Engel was the oldest of the Haymarket defendants, but one of the most radical. He wasn't on speaking terms with some of the moderate anarchists with whom he would soon share a gallows. He was a German immigrant toymaker, gentle and honest.

Albert Parsons stood out from his defenants. He was American born. At 13 he'd run away to join the Confederate army, and after the war he dedicated his life to undoing the evil he'd helped promote. He was shot for trying to register black voters in Texas.

I realized last night that what I want most from anarchism is to become "real", not real in the sense that I or others dont exist. Real in the sense that I gain full agency, that im not turned into a number, just a part of the population by the state.

So many innocents have died already and many more will soon, all because of idiotic fascists who overestimate themselves. I can hardly even fault this man for what he might do in retaliation, I'd completely lose my mind if I lost my wife, mother, and nieces.
