I wasn't expecting to end up where I did on this journey with Charlie Walker. It was chilling in parts. Only the brave would even contemplate such a journey. On Thin Ice reads like an edge-of-your-seat thriller. A fantastic book.

Don Siegel's "Edge of Eternity" was superb. It can't have been easy to shoot on such a low budget. The Canyon made for a spectacular backdrop. The chases were so well shot. Definitely an inspiration for some later Bond movies. I see what you mean by "termite art" @josearroyo.bsky.social

Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.

Before his Hollywood breakthrough in the 1980s with "Witness" (1985) and "Dead Poets Society" (1989), Peter Weir was a very Aussie filmmaker. "The Cars That Ate Paris" (1974) and "The Plumber" (1979) were two decent early films from the massively talented director. Great stuff #BFI

Marco Bellocchio's "Slap the Monster on Page One" (1972) is a deep dive into what we now call "fake news". It's about the consequences which emanate from a culture more concerned with printing the news than its relationship with the truth. A lovely release from @filmsradiance.bsky.social

"L. A. Confidential" (1997) stuck with me. I loved how it sanded away the glamorous layers of Hollywood and dragged its culture through the gutter. A great film directed by Curtis Hanson, based on the James Elroy novel. An ensemble cast as well.

Situated on the #Chicago River, THE MART, formerly known as The Merchandise Mart, occupies more than 4 million square feet (approximately 372,000 square meters) on a lot the size of two and a half city blocks! It is one of the most impressive #ArtDeco buildings I have seen anywhere in the world.

There is something deeply contextual in reading a book about a city when you happen to be in that city. Jackson Park in Chicago was the site of the 1893 World Fair. Today the park features about 200 cherry blossom trees, which bloom each spring planted to commemorate that event.

By the time I became a student at Glasgow Uni in Sept. 1996, #Trainspotting was huge! It was the whole package with great locations, cool film posters, brilliant dialogue, young talented actors and this rocket tune from #Underworld. Danny Boyle caught lightning in a bottle. That was 30 years ago!

I hadn't watched #Jabberwocky in years. In his debut as a solo director, Gilliam (1977) managed to turn what could have been a horror film into something that was more frolic and so very English through bizarre characters like Dennis Cooper. I enjoyed the essay by @scotttobias.bsky.social
