Billy Bat sound effects thread! Brendon (@lettererbrendo.bsky.social) and I adore the way Urasawa draws sound effects, and are so excited to adapt the Billy Bat sound effects into English. For years, we'd talked about the quirks they have and how to replicate them. Here's a thread of comparisons!

Billy Bat volume 1 is out in English now! It's my favorite comic ever, and I'm so grateful that I get to letter this edition alongside @lettererbrendo.bsky.social. We literally fantasized for years about stylistic choices we would make if we ever got to letter it, and I want to share about those!

Record Journey Vol. 1 releases today! This is one of the titles I’ve been most excited about. I’ve been interested in this series long before it even got licensed and as soon as I saw Titan announce it, I begged my editor to let me work on it haha 😆 I hope everyone enjoys it! #manga #lettering

typesetting (only one part of lettering) is not just "put in text". you need to know what looks good and stupid AI does not know that! and every attempt at this has always been something ugly as hell, disrespectful af, that someone in my position has to clean up!! wasting everyone's time and money!!

I've seen comments on other websites saying this is a good use of AI because typesetting is just grunt work. No it isn't! There is a lot of skill and craft to good typesetting and this is aiming to take jobs from people to automate what should be a human process! This sucks!

“GlobalComix’s AI translation copilot delivers 85–90% cost savings compared to industry-standard manual translation.” These AI tools will always rely on underpaid freelancers doing three jobs for a fraction of the wage of one. They’re merely a justification for not paying people.

So I was in that Global Comix Discord meeting awhile back where they said, checks notes, we won’t use AI for translating. Well… Sorry to repost a Substack article but here’s the full icky details 👇🏻 leadvc.substack.com/p/1b903618-4...

If you don't want gen AI in your manga, anime, game, and light novel translations, now is the time to make your voice heard. Write to your favorite publishers and developers and ask if they are incorporating LLMs into their process. And most importantly, tell them you will vote with your dollars.

As machine translation tools under the banner of AI become increasingly accessible and easy to use, the light novel landscape is at a crossroads. Do light novel publishers compromise their product for more speed, and if so, by how much?
