For years anyone who played in a half-decent Newcastle team was labelled a “legend”; now people are getting touchy about its use for the club captain who ended the longest trophy drought in English football history…

Based only on a few clips, a few numbers and watching him speak, I’m very confident the keeper is going to be good. And just having a good keeper last season would have been enough for European qualification. Whether that’s still the case now…

Events of the past 48 hours have very much changed my thinking; I’d just like the Bruno thing done now. Newcastle have no coach, no coaching staff, no starting goalkeeper and no captain as they begin the key stretch of pre-season. All of this stuff needs to move quickly

There was Newcastle United before Eddie Howe and there will be for a long time after, but I really enjoyed supporting his version of the club. While there’s no doubt he made mistakes in the last 6-12 months, I’m just a bit gutted – in part at how it’s played out, but also just that he’s going

Not the biggest story, but let’s hope this hasn’t spooked the prospective new goalkeeper, because no manager is doing anything at Newcastle until that is sorted

So, NUFC managers let down by those in the boardroom and choosing to leave the building: Arthur Cox 1984 Jack Charlton 1985 Kevin Keegan 1997 Bobby Robson 2004 Kevin Keegan 2008 Rafa Benitez 2019 Eddie Howe 2026 …and that’s just in my lifetime. We’re nothing if not consistent. What a club.

Some will be cheering this news but today feels very much like January 8th 1997 to me. Howe, like Keegan, gave everyhing he had and was let down by those above. A huge task now to find the right replacement because when this club loses momentum we've all seen how it goes.

Coming back to this, I think it maybe is just normal for fans of Arsenal/Liverpool/Man Utd to see a transfer rumour and just assume it will happen. It happens often enough to reaffirm that belief. Arsenal fans are losing their minds over Vini when the story so far is simply that they’re interested

At Newcastle, we’re supposed to know a thing or two about being delusional, so you almost have to respect Arsenal’s apparent belief they can sign a rival club’s captain and best player for a fee where they come away thinking they’ve got a good deal. Too much time on Transfermarkt, I reckon

Always, always, always best to watch/hear quotes rather than just read them. If anyone’s drawing big conclusions from what’s been said here, I think that’s on them:

Keegan’s passing is perhaps a timely reminder Newcastle and Newcastle fans can and should think and talk big, but I’d hope they/we will never act with the same arrogance as, say, those Arsenal fans who seemingly see Bruno’s NUFC contract as a mere momentary inconvenience
