Opinions my own and not those of my employer. Professor Division of Informatics, Clinical Epidemiology, and Translational Data Science Department of Medicine Oregon Health & Science University http://www.billhersh.info

Each year, I give a lecture to first-year medical students at two universities. Entitled, Information is Different Now that You’re a Doctor, I introduce the field of clinical informatics and describe how the relationship with data and information changes when one becomes a physician.

Gosh, it’s almost as if he is, um, a liar He also lied when he said he wasn’t banning certain words; we wasted months and months of time removing “racial disparities” from our grant (endless hours on the phone with the NIH program officer) He lies as frequently as you and I breathe

In the #NASEM fireside chat with Jay Bhattacharya, he says there is no political review of grants. 👀 NIH staff being required to censor grants base on a computational text analysis tool beg to differ. www.science.org/pb-assets/PD...

Summary of the NAM workshop especially Director Bhattacharya’s Fireside chat. I will still post my reactions later, but I need some rest first.

Blog post summarizing today's #IntegrityNASEM workshop, focusing on Bhattacharya's "fireside chat." TL;DR - Chat with the NIH director was the WORST part of the entire event. Pretty dire. Includes some choice quotes from @jenna-m-norton.bsky.social. neurodojo.blogspot.com/2026/04/nati...

1/n Listened to a thought provoking lecture by @billhersh.bsky.social on the role of AI in education and the need for education about AI. It seems to me that we need a radical rethink about the many purposes of education and how to deliver education to achieve those purposes. Surely it is time to...

Applications are open for the Human Microbiome Data Discovery short course! This is a 2-week course for postdocs and junior faculty to learn #datascience skills in #microbiome science. Offered May 4 - 15, 2026 in Portland, OR at OHSU Learn more at bit.ly/microbiome-data-course

It was gratifying to be awarded the @amia.org AMIA Academic Forum Health Informatics Educator of The Year Award at the Annual Symposium, but equally gratifying to be called out twice in Jim Cimino’s Year in Review session at the meeting.

This year marks my 40th consecutive #AMIA2025 fall meeting, dating back to SCAMC, and including the virtual meeting during the pandemic in 2020. Extra special this year is my daughter Alyssa attending, along with my grandson, and we will all be decked out in AMIA t-shirts!

There are many worse things the Trump Administration has done but this one hits close to home for me. One of the things that the US government does very well is create high-quality data sets and tools to use them. It is sad to lose these tremendous resources. apnews.com/article/cens...

Data scientists perform last rites for 'dearly departed datasets' in 2nd Trump administration

A group of U.S. data scientists has published a list of federal datasets that have been altered or removed since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

What a great night! I feel better this morning than I have in a long time. Even though I do not agree with all of his policy positions, I am thrilled for Zohran Mandani. Great news in Virginia, New Jersey, and California! I hope this is the beginning of the end of Trump 2, but much work still to do.

I am a Cubs fan through and through, but enjoyed this World Series immensely. I was rooting for the Canadian team just to be able revel at a non-US team winning in the era of Donald Trump, but I can't complain about the victorious team from a blue state with many immigrants on its roster.
