If we experience ourselves as separate individuals, compassion is generosity directed outward. If we experience ourselves as one body, compassion is simply the natural response to our shared condition, and serving another is no longer sacrifice. It is participation in reality.

Joanna‘s words permeate me more deeply, the more we face. Such a tender, potent way to see the wisdom and love in the grief and anger and questions. Seeds of life in here too.

A picture of a white woman Joanna Macy in her 70s with a clear look in her eyes and a sense of brightness looking out at the horizon line… It’s a black-and-white photo. Overlaid is a quote from her that says: “"This is a dark time, filled with suffering and uncertainty. Like living cells in a larger body, it is natural that we feel the trauma of our world. So don't be afraid of the anguish you feel, or the anger or fear, because these responses arise from the depth of your caring and the truth of your interconnectedness with all beings. And the sorrow, grief, and rage you feel is a measure of your humanity and your evolutionary maturity. The heart that breaks open can contain the whole universe. Through our deepest and innermost responses to our world we touch that boundless heart."
- Joanna Macy (Work That Reconnects)

Oh this luminous heart, Joanna Macy. So powerful that even in hospice, her dear ones say she's singing songs of the Great Turning... She is a Great Song, a portal into deep Earth love & belonging. Cherishing and honoring her gift to my life and so many kindreds and Life itself. Bodhisattva ❤️‍🔥🙏🏼.

"Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life." - Hermann Hesse 🎨 Julia Tar

“‘There’s an opportunity for us to set a new standard, to show America that we can restore, as humans, a watershed that’s been degraded for the last 100-plus years.’ He’s proud that tribal nations are leading the effort.” Great @btoastie.bsky.social story on Tribes returning salmon to the Klamath.

The Klamath Tribes couldn’t get federal dollars for salmon. Then the Yurok stepped in - High Country News

For more than 100 years, salmon had been absent from the Klamath Tribe’s lands — a fact that cut them off from funding sources to fix that.

If Fourth of July fireworks aren’t your thing, the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is offering a quieter light show. The annual Firefly Viewing Nights lets visitors trade fireworks for fireflies, as naturalists warn the glowing insects are disappearing in many parts of the country.

The videos from different immigrant communities across the country celebrating their World Cup teams is just the perfect summation of what's actually worth celebrating about 250 years of the USA. I love this so much. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

In the United States, Every World Cup Team Is a Home Team

At block parties, backyards and beer halls, an expanded tournament gave immigrant diasporas large and small the chance to revel in support of their home countries.

I love the World Cup thing where you have a window open, and you’re watching a fun game and then bam, you hear a round of cheering because your neighborhood is suddenly all huge fans of The Congo

Pt 2: May this solstice invite us into deeper gratitude for the earth, renewed commitment to compassionate action, and a profound appreciation for the interdependence that sustains all life.

Spending time in Oregon’s biggest dark sky sanctuary at Summer Lake hot springs a week ago was one of the most potent vitalizing experiences. Still reverberating. 📸: Dark Sky Oregon
