I look forward to all the reports & coverage about all of the internal problems & mistakes of all of these other institutions, in the same way that universities are constantly blamed (& blaming themselves) for “declining trust.” “Compared to what?” news.gallup.com/poll/712436/...

“Compared to what?” is always the essential question when asking about critiques of higher education & universities, whether we’re discussing declining trust, freedom of speech, viewpoint diversity, or any of the other things.

Have to imagine it's a complete coincidence that the same outlets publishing one piece after another talking about how extremely dangerous and unacceptable the Left is are also laundering genocide and normalizing targeting of trans people while featuring puff pieces on Far Right fascists.

every time you write overly defensively you should remember that you are pursuing a strategy of writing careful sentences specifically for people who demonstrably either won't or can't read them

BeijingPalmer@beijingpalmer.bsky.social · 2mo ago

there is literally no amount of caveats or careful wording that will protect you from stupidity or bad faith, so you might as well say things straightforwardly and strongly to begin with.

It bears noting that Dr. Willoughby-Herard is also the co-editor of a forthcoming SUNY Press book & underscoring that amid and despite the actions of her uni she has never stopped giving and contributing to her colleagues, her field(s), & the pursuit/production of knowledge.

Rebecca Colesworthy@rcolesworthy.bsky.social · 2mo ago

Mutual aid request: Tiffany Willoughby-Herard continues to be cruelly punished by her uni for standing up on behalf of students and Palestinians. The Chancellor has now taken away her (and hence her kids’) health insurance. Please give if/as you can. Thank you, friends. chuffed.org/project/1562...

I just realized, reading article proofs, I almost always use "speculatively" to mean something like "dialectically" (I credit/blame C. L. R. James) but these may not be a universal substitution.

U.S. troops aren’t supposed to be policing an American city just because the president thinks it’s enemy territory. There’s no reason for this guard deployment to Memphis and definitely no reason for them to be shooting or killing ANYONE there Out

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social · 2mo ago

Don’t look away from Memphis. Don’t look away from Houston. Don’t look away at the nationwide ICE surge. The trump administration is counting on you losing interest and falling for its tweak in tactics. zeteo.com/p/trumps-vio...

have had some strange vibes from such men who are even deeply involved in work to curb police power but then use things like "and they can't even clear rape cases!" "look at the rape kit backlog!" to make their case.... though have no other interest in addressing rape or supporting survivors

Kat Tenbarge@kattenbarge.bsky.social · 2mo ago

It is truly incredible how some of these male leftists who correctly criticize the police and court system will turn around and say a rape allegation can’t be taken seriously unless it passes through the cops and courts

All of this. Adding: HR is also code for the state. if you are an affluent man with inherited entitlement Mark describes here, you simply don’t encounter the state very often. Maybe the DMV. But most of these dudes work. HR translates state power by managing regulations and risk.

Mark Andrew Price@pricelaborecon.bsky.social · 2mo ago

I don’t think "Dem HR ladies" is labor coded or working class aligned. It comes from the same place everything that is terrible in the last two years has come from. The backlash to the Me Too and Black Lives Matter movements.

2 years ago, Dr. Tiffany Willoughby-Herard was arrested at @ucirvine.bsky.social as UCI chose to repress its Palestine encampment & fail its constitutional obligations. Her disciplinary case now rests w/the Chancellor. Let's ensure he knows what's right, sign/share! sites.google.com/view/withdra...

My client Prof. Willoughby-Herard heroically stood up for students and was assaulted by cops. Then UCI tried to fire her. The Committee recommended unpaid suspension, but there should be no punishment for protecting students. Please sign and share to support her! sites.google.com/view/withdra...

seeing more of a particular brand of aggro post lately ("if you weren't a coward you'd be doing xyz thing that would have you dead or in jail" from posters who appear to themselves neither be dead or in jail). could just be feds/bots/trolls trying to entrap people on here but a PSA just in case

Today at FOREVER WARS, we're publishing the sort of piece that I think makes us distinct. Like many of you, I watched the Belfast anti-Muslim anti-migrant pogroms in horror. I never heard about the Belfast that fought back. I learned that from my Belfastian friend Sarah Kay, who writes about it here

Confronting The Belfast Pogroms

Guest writer Sarah Kay reports on the community resistance to the anti-immigrant assaults in her beloved city—a solidarity overlooked by the media
