MS NOW: "The Talarico campaign is filing a legal motion to unseal two depositions Ken Paxton gave in 2019 and 2022. A source tells MS NOW the Talarico campaign has reason to believe Paxton admitted to crimes in those depositions."

Mark Carney is one of the most reasonable, nicest and most clever heads of state currently. I'm not saying this because we plan to move to Canada in 2y, but because as German citizen I'm simply jealous! 😉

I did no want to mention it yesterday & spoil Ukraine's Independence Day, which was a magnificent display of patriotism, stoicism, enthusiasm + determination. But it was 4.5 years to the day since the full invasion. Day 1644 is upon us. Here's Tuesday's daily thread:

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro says RFK Jr. offered federal help after two unvaccinated people died from measles, the first U.S. deaths this year. Shapiro declined, saying PA could handle it, and confronted Kennedy, telling him: “There’s real life consequences to spreading misinformation.”

ICE just arrested Sisi Rose—a 33-year-old Indigenous U.S. citizen—for protesting their illegal detention of Native Americans outside their Sacramento office! Locking up First Nations people on their own stolen land is peak tyranny. End this lawless terror and free Sisi Rose now 🎥 916EyesOnICE

Black water coming out of the taps. Limited access to medical care. Verbal abuse from staff. Poor living conditions. This is what’s happening inside Stewart Detention Center and for-profit prisons around the country. Shut them down.

"I was not shocked that he helped somebody. My shock is that he was murdered. And no one has given us the complete truth or anyone has been held accountable. And it's been 7 months! ... there was more effort in vilifying him than pursuing justice" -- Alex Pretti's parents

Retired Navy Commander Bobby Jones on the part of Doris Miller’s story too many Americans were never taught: His heroism at Pearl Harbor should have earned him the Medal of Honor. Why didn’t it? “I’ll give you one guess. He was a Black man.” Now they want to take his name off an aircraft carrier

Before last year, there were no US measles deaths in a decade, and now we have had 5 deaths in two years. Measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000, but will lose that status this year. This is an abject failure of public health leadership.

Chart: Annual US measles cases

Norm Eisen of Democracy Defenders Fund: “Please don't overreact to Roberts Court decision on the contemplated USPS ballot moves They simply held that the injunction came too early in the process, before there was a final rule. Now we HAVE a final rule & we will litigate it.”

#ICE has violated court orders in Minneapolis. Shocker. Officers are now going under cover and spying on people in church, running plate’s and doing all types of illegal acts. Gotta make that quota I guess. Unbelievable.

"ICE tactics, already sadistic, are looking increasingly like torture," writes @judith-levine.bsky.social. "The slim avenues to legal recourse and the refusal of transparency or accountability by the perpetrators of de jure and de facto torture are driving detainees to desperate measures..."

Plans for gloves that can deliver electric shocks underline the homeland security department’s sadistic practices

When you appoint reality TV people to the most important positions of the government running massive federal agencies, don’t be surprised when they treat the job like a reality TV show starring themselves while we pay them and the expenses.

For 50 years, Cuba didn't take deportations. Now the Trump admin is dumping elderly Cubans ordered deported decades ago into southern Mexico, many who have been complying with immigration check-ins since before ICE existed. There should be a statute of limitations/expiration date on removal orders.

A picture of an elderly man with grey hair sitting in a small room, next to a cot and a shelving unit with a few clothes on it. He is in a white tank top. Underneath is the following text:

"Julio Borrell, originally from Cuba, in Tapachula, on July 30, 2026 (Lisette Poole for The Atlantic)
Borrell told me that he’d come to the United States when he was 26 as part of the Mariel boatlift, the mass exodus of Cubans who traveled on crowded boats to Miami in 1980. He had seven American children, 11 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. He had run a mechanic shop and renewed his visa each time it neared expiration. He could feel his body breaking down after years of physical labor and had been looking forward to retirement and more time with his family in South Florida."

In Tapachula, @theatlantic.com's Kevin Sieff finds a city that "looks and feels the way towns in northern Mexico along the U.S. border once did—a dumping ground for those expelled from the United States and a gathering place for those snagged on their way north." www.theatlantic.com/national-sec...

“If you know my dad, you know he is a hardworking, humble man who is always willing to help anyone if he can,” he wrote. “My dad has his driver’s license, Social Security card, and work permit. We have done everything through immigration to get his green card approved, and we are just waiting.”

Just 10 billionaires have already poured nearly $670 MILLION into this year's midterms. In the entire 2008 presidential cycle, the last election before Citizens United, total billionaire spending was $16 million. If you're wondering what the real threat to "election integrity" is, it's Big Money.

Credit card debt just hit $1.26 trillion. Almost a record, and 44% of Americans say they’ll apply for a buy now, pay later loan in the next 6 months just to get by. We aren’t buying toys and vacations on credit, we’re buying groceries on installment plans now. Are you better off than 2 years ago?
