we are being asked to leave after only having one month of stability. we were originally told we could take over the lease to this apartment, so we are getting completely fucked. we have to start applying for apartments again and we have no idea how long we have with how unstable this roommate is

Disclosure: I'm on the list. Blocked three minutes after one quote post saying he'd outsourced his judgement to a bot. My only direct contact with him all year. Meanwhile 168 accounts that sent him properly harsh posts were left alone. "Behaviour, not identity" 🥲

"Maybe trans people were just ruder to him." Fair. So I scored every reply and quote. Very mild posts: 16% of everyone else blocked, 38% of trans people. Harsh posts: 59% vs 77%. Same words, different outcome, at every level.

Chart of the share of accounts blocked, by the harshest post they sent him, comparing accounts whose bio says trans with everyone else. Very mild: 38% vs 16%. Mild: 47% vs 34%. Moderate: 71% vs 46%. Harsh: 77% vs 59%. All levels: 58% vs 32%. Caption: across 1,678 accounts, a trans bio goes with 2.5 times the odds of being blocked after accounting for harshness, plausible range 1.6 to 3.7.

And most of it wasn't the bot. 1,087 of those blocks landed in three bulk loads on the morning of 30 Sept, before he even announced it. He calls that "a seed set of recent abuse". That list was his. Somebody chose it, and it's where the gap is widest: 2.8×.

Line chart of the running total of accounts blocked on 30 September, 06:00 to 15:00 UTC. The line is flat, then jumps three times: plus 342 at 08:23, plus 319 at 08:54 and plus 426 at 12:07, reaching over 1,100. A dashed line marks the public announcement at 12:33, after all three jumps.

"Entirely opt-in", he says. You get blocked for how you talk to him. 46% of the people on that list had never replied to him, quoted him or mentioned him this year. They didn't opt into anything. They were found.

Four stacked bars showing what each blocked account had done before the block. First load, 342 accounts: 283 had replied to, quoted or mentioned him. Second load, 319: 182 had, 60 only used his name, 72 had no contact. Third load, 426: only 71 had, 210 only used his name, 91 had no contact, 54 unreadable. Blocked one at a time, 184: 147 had.

Bluesky's Head of Trust and Safety handed his block list to a bot. 1,271 people blocked in eleven days. He says it never looks at who you are. Blocks are public, so I checked. Trans people were blocked at 2.5× the odds of everyone else, for posts of the same harshness. 🧵

Title card reading "Who the autoblocker blocked". Three figures: 1,271 accounts blocked in eleven days, against twelve in the two years before. 46% of the readable bulk-loaded accounts had never replied to, quoted or mentioned him this year. 2.5× the odds of being blocked for a trans-identified account, against others who wrote equally harsh posts. Below, a quote from Aaron Rodericks, 1 Oct 2026: "These do not factor in your bio or your identity. I have zero clue who you are."

“girl cats are mean” “girl cats are standoffish” “girl cats are —“ my girl cat is constantly trying to put her nose inside my nose so have you considered that it’s a you problem
