My godfather passed away today at 5am in the hospital. They couldn't save him ... I've been balling my eyes out and sobbing really loudly. I'm feeling exhausted now. This feels so very unfair how we lost him, I am very upset and saddened. I just hope his wife will let us visit for the funeral day.

This image shows what I believe is the first amateur detection of light echoes from SN1987a - 33 years after the event.
The light echoes are produced when the initial flash from SN1987a is subsequently reflected off interstellar dust as light travels outward from the event. Direct light from the supernova was observed on Earth in 1987, and we then see light reflected from dust in the interstellar space arriving later because it has travelled further to reach us.

The detection of light echoes was created by subtracting two Luminance images taken almost 8 years apart, on 24th Oct 2012 and 21st Sep 2020 respectively, in order to create a difference image which was then superimposed on a regular colour image of the area. The expanding light echoes appear as roughly circular concentric arcs, centered on SN1987a's location.

The image is a mosaic of two deep fields centered near the bright Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The field is filled with numerous bright colourful nebulae and star clusters (an annotated version is available here). At the LMCs distance of approximately 160,000 light years, the field of view seen here spans a massive 2850 x 1950 light years!
At this large scale the nebulosity seem to feature many bubble shaped voids of different sizes. These are formed by the radiation pressure from young star forming regions and shockwaves from ancient supernovae. The small but comparatively recent supernova remnant of SN1987a is also vis...

The Prawn Nebula, also known as IC 4628, is a large emission nebula located in the constellation Scorpius. Situated about 6,000 light-years from Earth, this nebula spans approximately 250 light-years across, making it a significant region of star formation. It is illuminated by the radiation from hot, young stars embedded within it, which ionizes the surrounding gas and causes it to glow. The nebula emits primarily in the red part of the spectrum due to the abundance of hydrogen gas.
The Prawn Nebula is a part of the larger Scorpius-Centaurus Association, which is the closest massive star-forming region to the solar system.

My favourite month is around the corner!! Here's an old favorite galaxy that I'm glad to have had the chance to process some new observations for. This is also known as the Black Eye galaxy, and is among the most striking galaxies that Hubble has looked at. Previously a Hubble Heritage image release, new imagery is around 2.5 times the resolution of the old WF/PC2 imagery. That means more refined details are visible, especially If you are able to zoom all the way in. In fact, the texture of the individual stars forming even the smooth, redder, non star-forming parts the galaxy are now revealed. If you do zoom in, don't mistake that grainy, noisy texture as actual noise. Those are stars!

I went ahead and did use some old WFPC2 data just to show glowing hydrogen gas. This usually works well without lowering the image quality, despite the disparity in resolution.
