Data characteristics of light detection and ranging (lidar) data represented as (a) point clouds or (b) waveforms; common lidar-derived products describing (c) the canopy and ground height or (d) individual tree woody structure; and (e) an overview of common structural metrics that can be estimated with lidar across different scales, shown above the lidar platforms typically used to derive those metrics. A float column can hold two different kinds of missing: null for a value that is absent, and NaN for arithmetic that had no valid answer (think 0.0/0.0). Polars keeps them strictly separate.
