#29 Night Watch (Jayne Anne Phillips, 2023) Luminous but brutal story of have-nots (or are they?) set against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Prose so beautiful I had to read multiple passages several times. Deeply-layered characters and strong emotional payoff. A gem. #booksky 📚🖋️💙

“John Mercer Langston...began by saying that he was a believer in the Declaration of American Independence; and proceeded to show that all people in the land, white and colored, were slaves to the oligarchy which inaugurated the present rebellion” +

If this (especially the altered lyric in the third verse) doesn't move you to tears, well ... www.facebook.com/watch/?v=117... Though we can't be forever blessed, may you all have a peaceful Fourth ... and get some rest.

6.9K views · 202 reactions | Written and released by Paul Simon back in 1973 ‘American Tune’ has always been one of my favourite songs of his. He and Garfunkel performed it at the recorded Concert in Central Park, which is probably why I know it so well. It was stunning. Now here at Newport Folk Festival the incredible Rhiannon Giddens performs it. Paul picking out the beautiful melody apparently based on Bach's setting of a hymn “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” and Rhiannon accompanying on banjo and her voice soaring out as she sings some slightly amended lyrics to better reflect that which hopefully collectively we better acknowledge almost 50 years on and to allow a Woman of colour to powerfully and honestly sing this song. ‘ We didn’t come here on the Mayflower We came on a ship in a blood red moon ..’ Rhiannon Giddens tweeted ‘It’s important to say that Paul changed the lyrics. Not me’ Thanks to Amy Karibian who captured this and so many other moments from the festival. All are on her YouTube channel | Daily Dose of Musical Medicine

Friends, Claudette Colvin—the 15-year-old who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in March 1955 & joined the federal case against bus segregation that went to the Supreme Court — died today at age 86. But there are lots of myths and mis-impressions about her. A short corrective thread:
