This would throttle DC’s ability to self-govern. The $1b hole in DC‘s budget was caused by Congress, not the District, which has balanced its budget 31 years in a row. We should have the right to implement sound tax policy like any other jurisdiction. #handsoffdc oversight.house.gov/release/chai...

If you have not been outside yet, the air quality is as bad as predicted in DC. There is a haze and it does smell like smoke. Please limit your time outdoors today. Many camps have already announced that children will be indoors today.

This is another example of Pres. Trump using the military to try to intimidate our citizens. He’s done this across the country and DC has been under occupation for almost a year. DC residents won’t stand for the occupation of our city, our streets or our beloved parks. National Guard please go home.

Image shows an Instagram repost of Free DC Project with an image from a video of troops at Malcolm X Park this morning. Text reads: Secretary of War Pete Hegseth comes into Malcolm X Park touting military occupation and DC responds.

Below CM Nadeau adds:

Advocates say Bowser’s budget will worsen food access in DC

The mayor proposed eliminating an office that has helped low-income students access food over the summer and made it easier to start farmers markets.

POTUS sends armed thugs into our community to instill fear and exert power. I’m proud of neighbors who care for each other and turn out on a moment’s notice to stand together against fascism, who show what it means to be a supportive and protective community. We will not back down. We will persist.

There's video circulating on Insta of a tense scene in Mt. Pleasant last night: More than a dozen federal agents were in Lamont Plaza arresting a man for an open container violation. A woman holding a bat began heckling them, prompting US Marshals to draw their guns on her.

In an extremely difficult budget year, our committee was able to transfer funds to every other committee and fill gaps in the social safety net created by the Mayor’s proposal, including to support more people in temporary housing, access to food, wellness for seniors, and programming for teens.

The proposed budget is unfairly balanced on the backs of working families, while no sacrifice is being asked of wealthy residents who can give more. My proposal is simple: restore childcare, paid family leave, and healthcare with a modest surcharge on passive wealth.

A big lobby day at the Wilson Building today by @wearedcaction.bsky.social arguing for the reversal of planned cuts to childcare/healthcare programs. @brianneknadeau.bsky.social is speaking in support of new 2% surcharge on passive income to do so.

I’ve worked to contribute to housing vouchers in every budget I’ve worked on as CM. There’s no way I was going to break that streak now, even in a tight budget. The need is too great. More on a Housing Committee markup that prioritizes affordable housing:

Nonprofits are indispensable partners in carrying out the District’s mission—from providing housing & food access to youth programming & healthcare. They shouldn't have to dip into their own funds to cover "indirect costs" the behind-the-scenes support that makes those services possible.
