One way or the other, nuclear peace will last until the end of history.
honestly, the fact that we have made it through the atomic age *without* another use of nuclear weapons since 1945 is a miracle we don't fully appreciate
This is incredible. I am pretty glad our August 4th, 2026 isn't Bradbury's, but it's jarring to think how easily it could have been, or still could be, how we're always on that terrible knife-edge.
“Today is August 4, 2026, in the city of Allendale, California ....” Listen below to Leonard Nimoy’s recording of Ray Bradbury’s powerful 1950 science fiction short story “There Will Come Soft Rains,” set on this very day.
One small thing we have to do is stop saying "Mr. President." It's servile and undemocratic but mostly just childish. "Mr. President", come on. Real adults shouting that when they ask questions. Grow up.
Was just texting a friend about a Link Wray song that has moved me to tears on a night of whiskey, and my phone changed it to LinkedIn Wray, and I think I want to burn the world to the ground.
Welcome back, 400 Theater! This small Rogers Park theater reopens today after being closed for almost three years, so I drew this to celebrate.
One of the best things someone (I have no idea who, now) said that year was that Birdman was about how hard it is to make art as good as Boyhood.
during boyhood's oscar campaign, anonymously-referenced directors started talking about how if THEY had twelve years, they'd make something super duper good compared to what linklater did. now, it's been twelve years so: where are these extra-special boyhoods? www.texasmonthly.com/culture/boyh...
I don't think I knew we said "sportscasters" in 1988. I might have a vague memory of it but could be giving myself an instant false memory/Mandela thing.

After she lost, a lot of people were saying “oh I hope she learns from this, she still has a lot to give” etc. I hope these people now notice that she has instead refused to endorse the candidate who beat her and begun spewing lies blaming AIPAC, who actively opposed the winner!
There you go White Sox. Win tomorrow and get the split. It's all I want, for tomorrow, at least.
SpaceX rocket that exploded shortly after takeoff destroyed land & wildlife: Concrete chunks had left craters a foot deep & were strewn across tidal flats, almost four acres of state park burned, 7 bobwhite quail eggs & a collection of blue land crabs incinerated. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

This is exactly what Lindsey Graham deserves, his funeral being an opportunity for people to kiss up to Trump. It's all he deserves to be remembered for.
Hannity: "My President, Lindsey probably has a heavenly version of Mar-a-Lago. It may even be a little bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if he added one big beautiful ballroom and an arch somewhere on the property. Because he would want to obviously duplicate his dearest friend in life. You."
People who have seen that Odyssey movie that seems to have gotten some attention: would it be cool to see it at a drive-in, or do I need to full sensorial experience?
In the full quote he talks about them needing to "come in legally" as if their legal status wasn't changed for no reason other than racism and to retroactively justify Trump and Vance's racist campaign lies. I just can't understand thinking about people this way. Destroying lives for sport.
Rep. Michael Rulli on reports that ICE is preparing to mass deport of Haitians from Ohio: "Let's get them out of here. Let's get 'em all out of here, and let's start from the beginning."
Sometimes you think of Sinéad, and think, god, she was great, but then you listen to her and remember that you can't capture how brilliant and raw and broken and strong and ferocious she was in a thought, and find yourself crying.

I get this, but for a lot of people, life-improving (getting out of debt, not worrying about rent or mortgage for a while) is life changing. A sudden injection of 65000 would change my life.
Yeah, there are a tiny handful of cases where 50k now is better than a 50% shot at $1m. But for the huge majority of people it’s just a straight-up terrible decision. One is life-changing money, the other is moderately life-improving money. People choose the former because they’re irrational.

Police murdered a Black man in the street in Madison WI today. Shot point blank in the head while on the ground, tased, and surrounded by four cops. It looks like an execution. Multiple videos circulating online. Things are about to get very bad here.

"Plan 9" is obviously shoestring and ridiculous, but there isn't a cynical moment in its runtime, which doesn't put it anywhere near the running for "worst film ever made."
July 22, 1959 Ed Wood's Sci-Fi Cult Classic "Plan 9 from Outer Space" premieres. Does it deserve to be called one of the "worst films ever made?"
Running for office with my opponents name on my podium. I'm not here to talk about myself, got it?
Wow -- Ken Paxton and his team abruptly shut down a news conference and bail after journalists try to ask him about his various scandals
I like that the implicit argument is not just "if I became a CEO I'd hate women" but also "if I got a job I'd of course immediately become the CEO, so have to avoid that!"
Being a freeloading piece of shit, but wokely
I think people on this site underestimate the political valence of "communism" a bit, though the GOP overstates it. But "Bolshevism" is just insane.
Scalise: "The Bolshevik takeover of the Democratic Party is in full swing, and communism is on the ballot this November"
The only justice coming from this game is that Trump is very bored and Infantino has to sit there listening to him whine
The US and Canada have the longest shared border in the world and have been at peace for 200 years. It's arguably the most remarkably successful relationship in history. And Republicans want to destroy it because Canada is "mean" to Trump.
This is a bill introduced in the congress to treat Canadian officials and their families like genocidaires, oligarchs or gross human rights abusers. I'm tired of the crybully horseshit, Yankees. This isn't a twitter post, or a TV hit, or intemperate comments from the ambassador.
80 has some jaw-dropping beauty but the Eastern Colorado-Nebraska-Iowa-Illinois and Indiana-Ohio sections are some of the most deathlessly dull stretches of driving I can imagine.
I don't even understand what she's trying to dispute/make up a conspiracy about. That this isn't happening? That the media is exaggerating it? Are they actually going with that?
This administration, supposedly representing the “real” salt of the earth Americans, is filled with people like this who have no idea how Americans actually live. For context, each Taco Bell outlet serves about 900 people PER DAY and there are over 300 Taco Bells in Michigan.
