The city of Madison is clearing the Ruiz memorial site right now with cops. Many unhoused folks are sleeping there right now and at risk for harm. If you are local and can get down there, please do ASAP. Help people clear their stuff out and de-escalate. Document the harm. Whatever you can do.

I’m posting on behalf of a Black mom organizer from Milwaukee who is staying in Madison to support protest work. As a family member of a previous victim of police murder in Madison, she has been vocal about police violence here for years. She needs financial support to cover a hotel.

Sami is a professor and community activist in Madison, so this crowdfunding is going to a trusted place. Also, if you would like to support the community, donating to Urban Triage and Freedom, Inc would also be helpful, as these are two orgs doing social justice work in the city.

Madison continues to gather all weekend at the site of Corey Ruiz’s murder. It has been very peaceful & emotional. Last night after 1am a car attempted to drive through the barricade and hit people. Please be careful if you are there after dark.

Some updates from Madison: Protesters interrupted Concerts on the Square last night & the local orchestra cancelled their performance in solidarity. Another vigil (that may turn to a march) is set for tonight 7/23 at 5 at the location of Corey Ruiz’s police murder.

My god. Just saw the video and yeah, it looks like the fucking cops executed a man right on the street. 4-5 cops were trying to subdue the man and at least one unloads 4-5 shots into his upper body/head? Terrible, terrible!

I started listening to the audiobook of Black Disability Politics by the incomparable Dr. Sami Schalk and read by the brilliant Imani Barbarin on Juneteenth, and I'm continuing to listen to it for Disability Pride Month. I seriously cannot recommend this book enough.
