My book argues that there is no meaningful evidence that multi-level marketing companies like Mary Kay operate differently from pyramid schemes. In fact, that have the same origins. And they are a right wing, anti-labor, anti-democratic ideological project. Invented by a eugenicist, no less!

I know I turned off the automatic photo backup after an unpleasant incident a few years ago when I opened my laptop at work to see my own nude, taken on my phone, on the computer screen. But I hadn't thought about iMessage: When I click the little green icon with the chat bubble, a store of 700,000 stares back at me, texts going back at least a decade. I begin imagining everything they might contain, the pieces of myself that, taken out of context, will certainly look nasty, mean, or criminal: a biting comment made in anger about my sister, vented to my boyfriend. A joke he and I routinely like to make during his tourist-filled morning commutes about wanting to "detonate the vest" in Rockefeller Center. As I sit there spiraling, a co-worker Slacks me that she wants to murder one of our colleagues. "К!!!!" I write back, suddenly conscious of the futile ways we like to think we're protected: using initials to gripe about our bosses, asterisks to hide gossip. "I think I'm a good person, but I talk a lot of shit," a journalist friend tells me. Worried about both hacking and getting sued, he has begun putting his phone in a Faraday bag when he's working. As this book details, the internal culture of MLMs function much like cults, cutting off alternative information that might come from outside and encouraging those inside the group to completely buy in and blame themselves or evil others if anything is going wrong for them. bsky.app/profile/rick...

It's notable that, as @bridgetgillard.bsky.social shows, the MLM industry got started (a century ago!) with unregulated supplements (aka vitamins). Strains of magical thinking, entrepreneurship, and conservativism are longstanding I am getting closer to convincing myself to write that review

Every anti-vaxxer I encounter seems to love weird unregulated supplements. They hate Big Pharma but they love Little Pharma, Big Pharma’s younger sibling who grew up without any adult supervision.
