Display at Red Emma's worker-owned bookstore in Baltimore of recent books in Graphic Medicine for a book event as part of #GraphMed2026. A stack of Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine is on display & sold out at the event!! The books are on display in a window with posters of radical activists, including Delores Huerta & Walter Rodney. Support Red Emma's!!

First inklings of this book were in 2019. Initial plans were delayed by the lockdown in 2020. The cfp went out in 2021. We have been working with our 41 amazing contributors for over 5 years, editing, securing permissions & high-res images. Could not have done it with anyone but @briwok.bsky.social!

Coined by the editors to reflect the unique combination of words and images in comics, “keywords/keyimages” offers a fresh way to understand how graphic narratives communicate experiences of health and illness. Rather than defining the field, this book demonstrates its range and complexity, offering a visual and verbal resource that reveals the methods, concepts, and politics shaping graphic medicine today.
Designed as a resource for classroom teaching and independent study, Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine provides practical tools for analyzing, teaching, and creating graphic medicine texts. The collection brings together thirty-seven contributions from comics artists, scholars, healthcare professionals, and patients, each focused on a single keyword/keyimage. Organized into five thematic sections—practice, pedagogy, process, personal/autobiographical, and politics—the book guides readers through the formal elements of comics, teach- ing strategies, creative processes, personal storytelling, and the broader health politics at work in the field.
