Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.
Great news everyone! In exchange for some minor concessions to be finalized later, Iran has agreed to not only open up the Strait of Hormuz, but to manage it for the US in exchange for only some minor fees! Truly a great victory for the United States.
Also a lot of what people remember as "lockdowns" weren't actual legal restrictions. They were just people being cautious all on their own. Covid was scary! People didn't want to get it!

Given what we know about the remaining stock of interceptors, the US might be better off announcing that Iran blew up a bunch of stuff at this point.

It is a tough reality to accept, but operating business as usual is no longer an option with this federal government. It requires the City to step up and support neighbors more than ever before, and sometimes requires us to step back from past partnerships because we can’t trust federal agencies.
They haven't learned Karate YET, but it's only a matter of time.

This is the exact problem with 'blue no matter who'. One reason people are finding less success in trying that argument is that "not them is enough" is that everyone has seen too many people using that argument being enough of them to get us here.

A Kodak Vigilant (Junior) 620 shows up with a roll of 620 on the same day as a new R72 filter, all on Thursday, and immediately the sky goes flat white and everything is dark. So frustrating.
This seems like the sort of thing that you wouldn't want to say if you were successfully doing this to a useful degree. But also it's pitch perfect for driving the UK out of its mind.

This is totally unfair. Iran is engaging in asymmetrical warfare by using things unavailable to the United States, like basic state capacity. State capacity is cheating!

The easy explanation here is that people given this question are treating it as a question about money, and not a secret math problem. Marginal utility of goods declines. Right there you have your answer!

cops hate automated enforcement *because* its fair. They conceptualize their role not as punishing rulebreakers but punishing "bad people" (poors and minorities). They dislike red light/speed cameras because they wind up punishing "good people" for doing something they see as essentially harmless

Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social · 2w agoit's fucking insane that so many people get away with hiding their license plates so that they can get away with running red light cameras and cops mostly don't care (I'm sure some of them do on their personal vehicles too). like this is something where broken windows policing actually makes sense.
The thing is, there are really good arguments for just splitting the United States up into a couple normal sized countries. There is no reason that we need to have this big of a country in the first place, and some fairly clear fracture lines for splitting it up.
