The real Billy Joel documentary is his 1990 concert film Live at Yankee Stadium, shot on lovely 16mm film, which inexplicably features Wong Kar-wai's "step printing" slow-mo technique
what I'm learning from this billy joel documentary is that when you find yourself in a tricky life situation, you can always get yourself back out of it by writing a legendary pop song
Feels like a shift that the NYT is casually using the word "centrist"; 5-10 years ago the only people saying "centrist" were using it explicitly as a pejorative coming from the left
Why not ask kids to multiply three numbers and turn in the result? Any three numbers they’d like.
I hate this shit. Reading education is not about picking books that are the easiest or most fun. It’s about teaching kids to read closely and critically. You wouldn’t tell a math teacher to only teach the easiest and most fun version of math!! Show the same respect for reading.
I walked past the Production Office at work where the PAs hang out and overheard one of them exclaim "You've seen Good Burger over 100 times?!," so I guess the kids are... well, I'm not actually sure if they're alright, but I personally felt good about it.
The Garfield RV belongs to someone in my neighborhood, I see it parked on the street all the time and today I parked right behind it. Always a joy
You have been visited by the Garfield RV
Has this take been on ice since like 2009? Even then I don't think it was accurate.
On social media, a broad consensus is that you can’t admit to struggle — at least not while you’re struggling. Doing so represents a failure so profound it’s almost existential. How did it become mandatory to demonstrate perpetual growth and progress online?
Finally finished Wittgenstein’s Mistress. In addition to being mostly an irritating slog, I’d also like to point out that Dalkey Archive’s 2023 edition is riddled with typographical errors. The bad boys of experimental lit are too bad to hire a proofreader I guess
I am committed to finishing Wittgenstein’s Mistress but I can’t wait for it to be over. I can’t take much more of this
possible to eat meal without spilling on shirt eat food no shirt spill possible? can i eat food without spilling on shirt clean shirt after meal impossible food stain on shirt how to clean food stain fashionable? world record meals spilled on shirt world record cash prize
Considering going to Bullitt tonight bc I’ve weirdly never seen it. But I’m salty that the Siskel has gone back to booking DCPs for almost all rep screenings even when prints are presumably available. I can’t imagine there is no circulating print of Bullitt?
I've been professionally compelled to watch many lame, unfunny tiktoks posted by public libraries. This is the first one I've ever seen that actually made me laugh
public libraries ftw
Now, for no reason except that it's the subject of my interest today, here is a thread of photographic portraits by Henri Cartier-Bresson — scans from his 1998 book Tete a Tete:

They should let Cooper Hoffman be James Bond. Imagine what it would do for male self-image. Men could stop being obsessed with going to the gym. There's no reason other than greed to keep making James Bond movies anyway so they might as well serve a social purpose
Amy Pascal teases that the next James Bond will likely be cast by the end of the year. “End of the year is a good bet.” (Source: Deadline)
The American moviegoing public to Marvel Studios after seeing The Odyssey and remembering what a real movie looks like:
🎶Don't come around here, Namor
Saw the trailer for Late Fame before The Piano today and wow that looks like it's gonna hit me right in the Henry Fools. The whole trailer might as well have just been a title card that reads "this is the kind of movie @b_wolo will like"
Having lost a bit of weight and keeping my hair short, I swear I’ve noticed a concomitant uptick in strangers smiling at me on the street. No one wants to smile at an unkempt fat guy
Finally made it to the new third screen at the Music Box. Just the right spot to see nude Harvey Keitel in 4K
I am committed to finishing Wittgenstein’s Mistress but I can’t wait for it to be over. I can’t take much more of this
never thought short form video would be able to capture a type of humor i can only describe as “the far side-esque” but this comes close.
Eminem introducing Obama at a Detroit rally for Harris speaks to me as a single-issue voter whose issue is that Curtis Hanson's 8 MILE (2002) is a great movie
