Happy Ray Bradbury apocalypse day to all who celebrate.
I don't need an excuse to take down my ancient copy of The Martian Chronicles, but today I'll happily use one. Today is the day.
A girl needs a knife. To make sacrifices and such.

A twist on lawsuits against AI companies for training on pirated books: an Nvidia shareholder is suing the company for "adopting and implementing an unlawful business strategy" (via @publisherslunch.bsky.social ). Filing is here: lunch.publishersmarketplace.com/wp-content/u...

My two favorite writers in one post?!?!?
New Uncanny Magazine Podcast 71 B features “The Cinema of Babel” by Sam J. Miller, as read by Matt Peters; “I called the swan down” by Laura Cranehill, as read by Erika Ensign; and Michael Damian Thomas interviewing Sam J. Miller! buff.ly/ec9TFuM
Salem showed up again, but the fight is not over! Last night the Salem City Council voted unanimously to begin the process of imposing a moratorium on AI data centers and to start rewriting the city’s zoning code to address them. #NoSalemDataCenter #NoDataCenter #SalemOr #Oregon
Today is the day on which Ray Bradbury's “There Will Come Soft Rains” (pub'd 1950) takes place. It’s a short elegaic story about a smart home slowly dying after its owners are wiped out in a nuclear extinction event. Re-reading it now, I’m feeling softly sucker-punched by what it has to offer us.
A crowd at 5pm. Need a ticket to get in! Going to be an interesting night! #NoDataCenter #NoSalemDataCenter #SalemCityCouncil #DataCenterMoratorium #SalemOR #Oregon
This is a totally random reminder that I do have an infrequent, kinda-sorta-mostly quarterly newsletter. I am definitely not writing the summer update right now. Nope. (if you want a full list of #StoryADay stories w/links, sign up now!) eepurl.com/hRjkJL

never thought short form video would be able to capture a type of humor i can only describe as “the far side-esque” but this comes close.

“It was such an empowering experience, thank you so much to everyone who came out. Your voice matters and is why we have a little more breathing room.!! Now show up again on August 3rd to get them to do a moratorium to give us even more.” –Felix (CouplaGoofs) #SalemOR #NoDataCenters #CouplaGoofs
Since July's #StoryADay was a success, I've decided to make August #PoemADay! Join me in the challenge to read a poem each day in August! I've made a point to read more poetry this year, but it's been mainly literary collections & anthos. I hope to read more spec poetry & magazines this month.
For the first time EVER(!!) I have successfully completed a #StoryADay challenge! I read a short story for every day in July. Click through for the full thread 💜💜💜
Did I mention I'm so here for @montecookgames.com and @rebeccaroanhorse.bsky.social collaborating with the Coyote & Crow team to make this setting. I *DEVOURED* the books. Also, I love giant corvids.
Oh hey, wow, @montecookgames.com is doing an RPG based on the Black Sun books of @rebeccaroanhorse.bsky.social www.backerkit.com/c/projects/m...
Everything counts as writing but writing is the only way to do it
ANIARA (2018), a stunning Swedish-Danish adaptation of Harry Martinson's epic poem of the same name (1956), about a starship adrift, becoming crucible & microcosm for humanity's own journey through the universe, & our existential despair at our apparent solitude in it--the silence of 'god'.
Are there any other poems that have been made into films? Could Nolan have a crack at "This is just to say"?
Increasingly, Soylent Green serves as one of the best metaphors for AI -- it's taking all that we are, as people, chumming it up, and feeding the slurry back to us. We're told that we need it, it's nutritious, it'll save the world, even as it damns it and us.
here's another throwback from 2016 a private poster commission inspired by Moby Dick honestly still really love this one, both the concept and execution i worked on pre-inked scratchboard for this one (so fully black) instead of the usual white claybord that i ink myself 30x40cm

It's July 1st, which means the short story read-a-thon begins TODAY! I'll be reading & sharing a Short Story a Day, each day of July! Please join me in celebrating short fiction in a fun, low-stakes challenge to read one story a day for 31 days!
Yesterday's hike was pure magic. My absolute favorite on the coast, my own sort of pilgrimage.
One of my grad students is doing a survey about what it is like to live with a writer, the anonymized results will be shared on an LA Worldcon panel: form.jotform.com/262105640565... Help out or pass around to your non-writing partners if you feel so inclined!

🎼 A touch of musical history to start the day. This is a lirone and here's what it sounds like. Emilia Benjamin introduces this rare instrument, also known as Heaven’s Hoover. #Music #musicalinstruments #musichistory #history #globalmuseum
I'm working on reading the last two stories for my month of #StoryADay. In the meantime, here's what I'm reading and plan to read in August.
