C19: The Society of Nineteenth-Century Americanists C19 2026: Cincinnati, OH -- March 12-14 Theme: UNDERGROUND c19society.org

Last night’s #c19 @c19americanists.bsky.social plenary, with founders and past (and present) presidents reflecting on the last 15 years, was a beautiful thing to listen to and gave hope for the present and future. Lots of love to all involved, including Chris’s pants, for keeping this org growing.

I was happy to hear @elisatamarkin.bsky.social celebrate the memory of Chris Looby’s pants (and their Twitter account) last night at @c19americanists.bsky.social. But I was pretty sure that account predated the 2012 meeting. A trip to the archive reveals they made their Twitter debut at SEA 11.

Elisa Tamarkin shouted out Chris Looby’s Pants, the Twitter account @cjloobyspants, at #2012c19, as reported by a Tweet from the pants themselves:

Chris Looby's Pants @cjloo... 4/13/12
#2012c19 I got thanked by Elisa Tamarkin for my role in bringing the fabulous to C19! But thank you all, too!

I knew Fall 2025 would be labor-intensive in terms of teaching, so it’s all easier said than done, but this is also a semester exciting conversations with folk I admire. A couple more on deck! ASA: American Studies Association AAR: American Academy of Religion

The 19th century abolitionist movement utilized a diversity of tactics and engaged in constant critical internal debate in the mission to end slavery. The movement needed speeches, lawyers, lawbreakers, newspapers, and armed resisters. History teaches us that freedom requires all of the above.

All, this is an incredibly important story paper for American women writers, and NIU holds almost 1,000 issues. Every $1K they raise will allow them to digitize 75 issues! The fundraiser ends at 11:59 CST on April 3rd. Please help if you can, even just the cost of a coffee! #C19AmLit
