From journal editing experience, LLMs appear to be *undoing* the good research of non-English speaking scholars. You can see signs of a solid study in a manuscript that chat or claude et al - used for "editing only" - have otherwise *wrecked*. I keep suggesting they try again without AI "editing."

People will complain about the deadening effect 'AI' has on writing, then a few sentences later say that it has potential to help non-English speakers publish their work in English. It can't be both. Yes, it will put their work into English, but it will be bland, plagiarised slop English.

Not a summer of respite with leaden-heart for Prof Arday. Several of us are going back to work, incl. myself. We're sick of racism & opportunities passing us by, but mediocre rubbish white academics aren't even adequately reprimanded upon ‘serious misconduct’. www.independent.co.uk/news/educati...

Academic folks: I've got two PhD students on the market this year, broadly within Global Asias and geography. (One on postwar environmental remediation in Vietnam, the other on infrastructure and aesthetics in Hong Kong.) Would love some leads on postdocs, esp. in this changing landscape. Thanks!!!

Didn't know this until today but Dolly Parton had a transsexual man named Jason Pirro work as her Hollywood chauffeur in the 1980s, per an interview he gave to The Sun in 1990. "Dolly has been good to me...Dolly knows all about me."

Climate damage would obliterate any economic benefits of new North Sea fields. Damage caused by carbon pollution from the oil/gas production, between £119bn and £336bn. Benefit, £28.7bn. Oil/Gas would be sold in world markets, not just kept for the UK.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

Race science characterizes mainstream research in anthropology, archaeology, psychology, and fields like geology and astronomy as well. The rigorous checks result in that. Regardless, we mustn't ever give equal rhetorical playing field to nazism. Do not cede an inch to the imperialists.

Academia is a unique space where people can pursue controversial questions wherever they lead. If the work is pseudoscience (and, in my view, Cofnas' race science clearly is), academia has effective channels for response: public criticism and peer-review.
