Most of my students who use AI to cheat do so when they’re in danger of blowing a deadline so it’s usually not hard to detect without using any software. Then, as you said, you need to talk to them about it and that’s no fun for anyone.
I am offline + mostly logged out for a severe health issue. My campaigns have been at 0 for DAYS. I have had to dedicate focus to the camp emergency fund. But we have deadlines on Sunday. We're matching 200 for Retaj. Please help me campaign. These families need you. linktr.ee/divyamp
One of the best things about being Comms Officer for BARS is working alongside a wonderful Communications Fellow!! If you're interested in helping me run the BARS Blog and social media feeds for the next academic year (and receive a stipend for doing so!!!), please check out the link below ⤵️
🌟Call for Applications: BARS Communications Fellow 2026-27 to assist with the BARS Blog and social media 🌟 Deadline - Monday 14th September Details - www.bars.ac.uk/blog/?p=6572
From journal editing experience, LLMs appear to be *undoing* the good research of non-English speaking scholars. You can see signs of a solid study in a manuscript that chat or claude et al - used for "editing only" - have otherwise *wrecked*. I keep suggesting they try again without AI "editing."
People will complain about the deadening effect 'AI' has on writing, then a few sentences later say that it has potential to help non-English speakers publish their work in English. It can't be both. Yes, it will put their work into English, but it will be bland, plagiarised slop English.
This review I published when I was EIC by Dexter Thomas, was the article that made it clear that Kusama anti-Blackness permeated her work, and even more disturbing, the art market was trying to cover it up in all sorts of ways.
What the Art World Doesn't Want You to Know About Yayoi Kusama
A new publication tries hard to reinvent Kusama as a champion of racial equity despite her troubling record of anti-Black statements.

The Green Party’s Zack Polanski has called on the U.K. government to hit “pause” on the construction of data centers to reflect on the environmental and societal impacts of the facilities behind the AI boom.
UK’s Green Party demands data center ‘pause’
U.S.-style data center politics could be on their way to the U.K.

Not a summer of respite with leaden-heart for Prof Arday. Several of us are going back to work, incl. myself. We're sick of racism & opportunities passing us by, but mediocre rubbish white academics aren't even adequately reprimanded upon ‘serious misconduct’. www.independent.co.uk/news/educati...

Hahahaha. Hahahaha. Hahahaha Ofc she's donating her own books. This isn't charity, it's promo. Arguably, Dolly's Imagination Library is more in the tradition of mutual aid, and that's why it works!
More than 200,000 print editions and audiobooks of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will be donated to schools, libraries and hospitals across the UK, US and other territories worldwide. Read more 👇
Academic folks: I've got two PhD students on the market this year, broadly within Global Asias and geography. (One on postwar environmental remediation in Vietnam, the other on infrastructure and aesthetics in Hong Kong.) Would love some leads on postdocs, esp. in this changing landscape. Thanks!!!
One more great thing about Dolly. She was a paid-up union member — American Federation of Musicians, Local 257, Nashville. And she had been for 58 years. www.afm.org/2026/08/afm-...
AFM Statement on the Passing of Dolly Parton
Today, the entire community of professional musicians mourns the loss of an irreplaceable icon and a generous heart: Dolly Parton. While the world knows her as a global superstar and philanthropist…

Dolly Parton knew what it was like to struggle as she fought for working families her whole career. From providing free books to kids to giving working women our "9 to 5" anthem, she was an icon and an inspiration. Rest in power to our union sister. We will always love you.
Dr. Steven Thrasher’s (@thrasherxy.bsky.social) final lecture as Renberg Chair will be broadcast on Instagram LIVE via @thrasherxy on Sunday, August 30th!!! 7pm Athens/Gaza/South Africa time 5pm London time noon NYC time 9am Los Angeles time
Didn't know this until today but Dolly Parton had a transsexual man named Jason Pirro work as her Hollywood chauffeur in the 1980s, per an interview he gave to The Sun in 1990. "Dolly has been good to me...Dolly knows all about me."
1. AFM, the labor union representing professional musicians in North America, is paying tribute to Dolly Parton, who was a member of its Nashville Local 257 for 58 years. AFM says that for decades, Dolly consistently filed union contracts for her recording sessions, live gigs and tours.
Climate damage would obliterate any economic benefits of new North Sea fields. Damage caused by carbon pollution from the oil/gas production, between £119bn and £336bn. Benefit, £28.7bn. Oil/Gas would be sold in world markets, not just kept for the UK.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

We've been getting a lot of questions about how the Internet Archive digitizes books. The short answer: page by page, by hand. You may remember our viral 2021 video of Eliza Zhang scanning a book. That's still how we do it. Meet Eliza, and learn how we scan books: blog.archive.org/2021/02/09/m...
Fiction has undergone a huge demographic transformation over the last 50 years. Men lost ground, which women gained. But the way some have written about it, you’d think men are, as a NYT headline suggested, disappearing. Hardly! Women have just caught up. sinykin.substack.com/p/where-have...

I also love how suddenly some scholars care about academic freedom to support the free speech of a white supremacist while so many of us are facing all kinds of troubles from disciplinary actions to losing jobs over Palestine. 😒 seriously, fuck them, fuck #cofnas and yes Free Palestine.
I doubt that Cofnas’ “Guide for the Hereditarian Revolution” was peer-reviewed 😂
Race science characterizes mainstream research in anthropology, archaeology, psychology, and fields like geology and astronomy as well. The rigorous checks result in that. Regardless, we mustn't ever give equal rhetorical playing field to nazism. Do not cede an inch to the imperialists.
Academia is a unique space where people can pursue controversial questions wherever they lead. If the work is pseudoscience (and, in my view, Cofnas' race science clearly is), academia has effective channels for response: public criticism and peer-review.

Pinker? Is that the Epstein-adjacent guy?
IMO @stevesalaita.bsky.social does *really* well in a Chronicle interview that feels very gotcha ("Confessions of a Campus Radical"). Below, facing a question designed to make him 'endorse' violence, he carefully indexes who is allowed to commit violence (Israel) and who isn't ("Hamas").
