One undeniable thing about LLMs that I can’t wrap my head around is that for the first time, we have digital systems with truly complex emergent behaviours. Not like system dynamics in the computing context, but action-oriented behaviours or constructs like j space. Absolutely bizarre

The mistake a lot of people make, IMO, is that while thinking about fiction and games through critical lenses can be interesting, not preferring to do so is not uncritically accepting the problematic pieces of that fiction or game as How The World Should Be.

I think about this every month and it doesn't stop being incredible to me; our words embed intelligence, both metaphorically and literally
I do think that reducing LLMs to "the [coding] robots" is a dull way to look at them, both as technological/cultural artifacts they're egregores we summoned from our written knowledge, and then reshaped into distinct identities with differing capabilities! that's *fascinating* on so many levels
"Nonhumans are all abominable horrors that must be cleansed so that Man has clean earth in which to till & orderly skies to chart with math" and "nonhumans are all Basically Just Marginalized People with similar beefs & as such always the justified party" are both crude anthrocentrism & presentism.
Far more daring to say "Yes the wandering fey prince has strange appetites & imperious demands, but he's still a participant in a shared tapestry, & we had to come to terms with what that means. Maybe it means a sword. Maybe it means a fete. Maybe it means tribute. Maybe it means a wood set aside."
the "hank green used ai" discourse is insane (forget it jake, it's bluesky) but my favorite was a notable user asserting AI use is identical to consulting a sex worker and thus inherently male coded and all i have to say to that is that someone is unaware of what gender uses companion bots in china
