Babies 🥺 I made a page with a bunch of different Kiri art and we’ve figured out places to fit it as we go. This chapter was a good spot for this first glimpse of younger Ed and his tiny jaguar cub 👀 They’ve really been through it all together, across time and also in this incredible chapter 😭

I'm trying to space out my art bumps, but... I'm SO happy with how this Ed turned out and I want everyone to see him 😍 There's the most delicious slow-simmering tension between these two, and as the storm keeps building outside, their connection keeps growing in the shelter, too. A+++ yearning.

Stede put a LOT of work into earning Kiri's approval with that bit of enrichment, and I likewise had a great time drawing from my own cat for the first bit of art in this chapter 😂 Beyond charmed by how beautifully Cal is showing how much Ed and Stede care about each other's animals too 😍

This chapter is so so good- really getting into the heart of the way Ed and Stede are seeing each other like nobody else has really seen either of them before. The way they connect and understand each other's hurts and struggles is one of my favourite things in the show and it is here, too.

Ed glances towards her. “Dated this guy once? He asked me who I’d pick, him or her.” “He didn’t like the answer?” “Didn’t give him one. He didn’t like that, either.” “I’m sorry.” “Don’t be.” Ed shrugs. “He was, you know. Okay. In hindsight he was kinda whatever.” “No great loss?” “Yeah, exactly.” “I don’t know whether it makes it better or worse, that these things happen to you, too.” It’s hard to think of anyone leaving someone like Ed. “What do you mean?” “Well, you know.” Ed surely knows. There’s no way that he doesn’t. He’s surely walked past at least one mirror in his lifetime. There’s one next door in the bathroom. He’s interacted, in some form, with other humans who have responded to him. Probably fallen at his feet.“Know what?” “That…” Stede halts. “If someone like you can get that kind of response…” “Yeah?” Ed isn’t looking at him, but he says, “You think?” “I’m not blind.” He’s bright red, he knows he is. There’s nothing he can do about that except hope that the harsh fluorescent light that bathes this building will treat him kindly. “Oh yeah?” For a man who must be used to being told that he’s stunning daily, Ed seems exceptionally pleased with himself for getting it out of Stede. If it were anyone else, Stede would think it a prank. “Anyway, it’s not like you look like you live under a bridge,” Ed adds. And, oh, Stede wasn’t expecting that. If anything, he goes even more bright red. “I could show you the profile of twenty-eight men over the last year who would disagree,” he says, then amends it to, “Well, some of them, anyway. The rest have blocked me after meeting me.” “Idiots.”

Up close he’s got glowy golden hair on his arms (and chest)- also very happy with how the sparkly wellies came out! These were the some of the first flamingos I drew for this story and they’re a bit less polished, but I love that, so they got to stay as they were, with all their personalities.

Next day bump! I absolutely love seeing Stede’s flamingo chaos through Ed’s eyes. Like nesting flamingo pair Arthur and Curtis, Samba the determined capybara is based on a real zoo story. This was a last minute art addition to the chapter but the inclusion is too charming to sit in the background.
