There are biographical elements in a lot of my stories, typically smaller details. For example: the family in “A Tall Thin House” getting a massive Christmas tree every year is something my grandmother would do. #HorrorWritersChat

With short stories, I never feel comfortable spending too much time on backstory. I tend to pepper in details that I hope tell readers enough. Eg: In my story The Black Van, I mention that the protagonist and his best friend first bonded over not having fancy lunchboxes. #HorrorWritersChat

Thinking about all the nonsense involved with phone calls when I was growing up. Busy signals, collect calls, remembering everyone's number. Phone cards. Long distance calls. Describe that to kids today and you'd sound like you were talking about churning butter.
