🧊🚸⛓️ ”ICE just arrested a 5-year-old boy on his way to a soccer game in my home city of Austin, Texas. His name, just like the name of the little boy from Minnesota, is Liam. And Liam should be starting kindergarten this week, but instead he’s sitting in a trailer prison right now in Dilley, Texas.”

 abolish ICE!

Our County Supervisor says the quiet part out loud in a note to a constituent. That despite passing a resolution that specifically mentioned ICE operations in the jail lobby and speaking out against ICE commandeering the jail, our hard fought board majority means nothing. They do not have the will.

Thanks for your note. To your question: Our land use ordinance currently only permits "correctional institutions,” which are defined as housing people "convicted by a court." That would exclude ICE detention centers on both private and public land. I've talked with Planning that should any ICE project try to get approval with an interpretation that they fit that category, the Board would be able to deny it.

I did get your previous email about the court decision to allow filming of ICE activities which is truly a great win! As to a broader ban of ICE in places like the jail lobby, I don't see political will (ie, three votes) on the BOS to do that and if we tried, I don't think we'd win in court. I'd certainly like to ban them from even entering SLO County, but the feds aren't going to roll over on that.

Thanks again for reaching out.

Honored to have the CAIR Action endorsement. We are fighting to protect civil rights, defend vulnerable communities, and build an economy that serves working people instead of corporate interests. The June 2 primary is our chance to demand real accountability.
