What does this 'relentless' approach look like? More criminalisation. People fleeing conflict locked out and locked up, despite it being impossible to submit an asylum claim from outside the UK. He does go on to endorse safe routes. But that's lost in the wider framing of refugees as a problem.

Burnham is a rebranding exercise, not an ideological or policy shift. Why do you think his speeches are packed with references to drinking pints, watching football and listening to Oasis? To convince the UK public (or at least a patronising, caricatured view of them) that he's a man of the people.

If he is serious about doing politics differently, he should have followed the example of the 14 Labour MPs who voted against it, knowing that the consequences of this Bill will only prolong hardship and suffering.
Without making a judgement on the Chancellorship... the fact that Net Zero is being described as a "personal interest" by an anonymous business leader here, despite it being in the PUBLIC interest and having overwhelming PUBLIC support surely says something about the power of business over politics.

The bill effectively ends refugee status in the UK, replacing it with a weaker form of time-limited protection. It also creates a 10k financial penalty for seeking safety, and rips up the right to family life. If it passes, any hope of Burnham being more progressive is already over.

Burnham's response will be such an important barometer for his tenure. If he truly stands for 'stronger public control', then surely that LAST thing he'd want is to surrender control over NHS drug pricing to US big pharma. Protect our health service, or be bullied by Trump. That's the choice.

So a £10k refugee tax isn't enough according to The Telegraph. Which begs the question: what would be? £100k? £1 million? Let's be clear: these proposals BILL refugees for having the misfortune of fleeing persecution.
Imagine. You spend years navigating destitution, discrimination and squalid accommodation, and then finally gain refugee status and employment. Only to be billed for those years of hardship; punished for a life you had no say in. A tax on the misfortune of being forced to flee.

Let’s get one thing straight. When Burnham says ‘stronger public control’, he just means ‘more regulation’. Under the Bee Network, public money still flows into private hands - the companies are just contracted to deliver a specific service. Galaxies away from public ownership.
