Our thoughts are with the loved ones of four people who died this week trying to reach safety in the UK. We don't know their names or what their hopes were for life in the UK. But we know they deserved better. And we know their deaths must not be ignored. In their names, we must save future lives.

For 75 years, the Refugee Convention has kept the promise of protection alive, offering a safe haven to millions of people forced to flee war, violence and persecution.
75 years after the Refugee Convention was opened for signature on 28 July 1951, it remains the foundation of the international refugee protection system and one of the most consequential international legal instruments ever adopted.
75 years ago, the world made a promise. The Refugee Convention was created in the aftermath of war to ensure that people fleeing persecution could find protection, safety, and dignity. For 75 years, it has saved lives across the world. Today, this promise is under attack. 1/3
For years, people seeking sanctuary have paid the price as our leaders repeat the same mistakes: more hostility, more cruelty, and more waste. And one thing should be very clear to everyone: it isn’t working. We're proud to join 200+ refugee orgs in showing our new PM a better way is possible:

🚨The sudden suspension of family reunion last September was heartless. The failure to reunite people with their loved ones trapped in Gaza is unconscionable. The Government must reinstate family reunion, now. People's lives depend on it. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

The new PM wants to put a stop to rough sleeping - that's great news. We've got a good place to start: extending the move on period, so newly recognised refugees have time to find a home, and scrapping plans to strip people refused asylum support of emergency help to keep them off the streets.

Reform UK councillors tried to scrap Birmingham's City of Sanctuary Status. A status that means welcome. That means helping communities thrive. That means kindness. We're pleased to say the motion failed and Birmingham remains a City of Sanctuary 🧡 www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midland...

Farage literally cheered on the riots in Belfast, and now is accusing others of violent language.
Without making a judgement on the Chancellorship... the fact that Net Zero is being described as a "personal interest" by an anonymous business leader here, despite it being in the PUBLIC interest and having overwhelming PUBLIC support surely says something about the power of business over politics.
After Zia Yusuf accuses critics of endangering Reform politicians with violent language, he is read a list of quotes where he called Reform's opponents "lunatics who deserve extinction", "sick arsonists" and "traitors" who will face a "reckoning". He says these are in "a totally different category"

The UK has introduced immigration or asylum legislation almost every year over the past decade. Yet people still wait years for asylum decisions, poor outcomes are routinely overturned on appeal & too many trafficking survivors aren't identified or supported. Today MPs will debate YET another bill 🧵
🚨 Reducing protections for trafficking survivors under the UK-France one in, one out deal has been found to be unlawful by the High Court. Those impacted and unlawfully deported to France must be brought back to the UK. More 👇 www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

Yes, as I recall the words were “island of strangers”, “one-nation experiment in open borders“, “squalid chapter” and “incalculable damage”
Asked whether he accepts any responsibility for rising racism and hatred over the last two years he has been Prime Minister, Keir Starmer's spokesman tells me that "you've got his words about the responsibilities of parliamentarians in the space of this debate"
Exactly. BBC repeatedly peddling narratives that are fuelling hostility towards people seeking safety, using extremely niche cases to effectively smear all refugees. It's deeply irresponsible. Especially for a public service broadcaster.
BBC main story across its outlets "we have found that an individual people smuggler is a criminal". Slow clap folks. What next? An expose on how the Pope is Catholic? It does not point to "widespread abuse" of the asylum system in any way, but they are desperate to claim it does.
You cannot address human trafficking without supporting & protecting survivors. The government's new Immigration & Asylum Bill does the opposite. A system that punishes survivors doesn't fight trafficking but enables it. We will keep fighting this. 📑 more: www.helenbamber.org/resources/la...
