I love this thread, and actually feel a little proud that my books do tend to include these types of characters. They are very useful for comedy writing and for keeping your book out of High Fantasy territory. I prefer my fantasy to be Not Unreasonably Far From the Ground.

Hello, I am someone who pays no attention to men’s soccer for 99% of my life but is now (for the next 5-10 business days) the biggest fan of both Norway and Egypt.

I spent 8 weeks watching a bunch of 6-year-olds play soccer this winter, and at this point I would sub in their entire roster.

Today is a good day to (re-)read Lincoln's Gettysburg address. Go on. It isn't that long.

It’s almost impossible to get my 6-year-old into trying a new sport (casually! At an appropriate 6 year old level!) because the intensity and focus of youth sports now starts at birth. I worry that a lot of parents are pinning their kids’ college hopes on sports, and it’s just not a productive idea.

As a former professional athlete, this is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard. Your kid has a less than 1% chance of getting an athletic college scholarship. You’re better off putting the money into a 529 plan.

Here is my Jane Yolen story, which I suspect is a pretty common one, or at least a variation thereon. I grew up on her books. One of my earliest memories is my dad reading Commander Toad books to me at the South Bend public library. Then I grew up and got a job in comics publishing. (1/)

I can't stress this enough. Being a great writer requires you being an enthusiastic reader. Read in your genre and out of it. (Yeah, even those kinds of books you swear aren't for you occassionally. You might be surprised.) Devour as much as you can.

The thing IS actually, there are so many incredible books that do serve children, speak to children, are exciting for children to read -- but those books die the death of invisibility. The industry doesn't give them material marketing/publicity support, and gatekeepers don't find them.

The cultural specificity of a novel is part of what makes it interesting. Yes, to kids as well as adults! Novels are not timeless, art is not timeless, and that’s part of why we make and consume it!
