After living in Amsterdam for 39 years, it was time to visit the Museum “Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder” (‘Our Lord in the Attic’). It used to be a secret church, with 2 balconies mostly painted in a dusty rose colour, up in someone’s very large attic (solder is the old spelling for zolder = attic)

Today I found out why closet-beds (or ‘bedstede) used to be so small in the 17th century. Back then people associated ‘lying down’ with being dead, so therefore they slept in a half-upright position. I always thought it was b/c most people were just smaller than me (I’m 1.65) They were, actually ;)

A closet-bed with the doors open, a small side table in front of the bed. On the right side there’s a wooden table next to the wall with a wooden chair next to it. The floor is made of black and white square parts of marble or stones. There’s a window on the left side, the ceiling is quite low.
