I mean I don’t expect to agree with everything Burnham does but I respect anyone who stands on the steps of Downing Street and says they are going to end rough sleeping. That is a sign of a heart in the right place.

There seem to be lots of stories along the lines of “Andy Burnham has been PM for a whole 48 hours and it’s a disgrace that he hasn’t solved the world’s problems yet.” Silly season is going to be even less edifying than usual..

All I can hear right now is snoring dog and birdsong. It's bliss. Though I had to get up at 7 to take the dogs out for a walk as even here it is going to be too hot for the rest of the day. The Highlands is being as restorative as ever.

My tip for committing in extreme heat is to two thirds fill a water bottle and leave it in the freezer over night and recharge in a work fridge during the day. Holding it against your wrists makes a very effective heat exchange.

So today we are going to see someone who is a better human being than some of his recent predecessors forced to set out the manner in which he leaves his job. Whoever takes over is going to have the same problems to deal with and we can only hope that he (cos no women yet in the frame) do better.

Do you think if media referred to Stephen Yaxley Lennon as "convicted violent criminal Stephen Yaxley Lennon" rather than "activist", this would change anything? He has multiple convictions for violent offences including assaulting a police officer & leading a violent brawl. #Thuggery #Racism

I really feel for Nicola Sturgeon. You could see the shock and trauma she has been through. On a personal level I have always liked her. On a political level I do think too much power in the SNP was concentrated in the hands of too few people but that is a different issue.

So, trans people are going to be punished for what they are rather than what any individual does. It’s a reminder to the rest of us minorities that our rights aren’t necessarily secure and, that if we don’t conform, they could be taken away. Canary in the coal mine, anyone? 🏳️‍⚧️

On Starmer, yes I think his time is up. He is not a bad person but he can’t deliver change. But the jostling by some to get it settled before Burnham can enter the fray is pretty unedifying. I don’t see how Labour emerges from this united.
