“The pretext for [Kristallnacht] was the assassination, on 9 November 1938, of the German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Herschel Grynszpan, a 17-year-old German-born Polish Jew living in Paris.”

I’ve changed my header photo to this one. It shows my father Herbert and his sister Lotte with their parents Fritz and Marta in their Frankfurt apartment before Herbert and Lotte were sent to England on the Kindertransport, and later Fritz and Marta transported to Lodz Ghetto, final fate unknown.

This is Winston Churchill visiting the White House during World War II. Funny how he isn’t wearing a suit either. Almost like he was a wartime leader defending his country from being slaughtered and wiped out by an authoritarian aggressor.

Once again, "we should raise tariffs on all goods to insane levels" is one of Trump's only consistent econ policies, but everyone with basic knowledge knows that's a moronic idea, which leads to Trump staffers repeatedly sanewashing it, only for Trump to go "no I want the insane version"

It is. And Bloomberg already has an US official saying Trump didn't mean the 25% tariffs against Canada and Mexico, he meant the reciprocal tariffs. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Germany needs a public investment boost, and this can only happen with a reform of the debt brake. I signed this call for debt brake reform - alongside Blanchard, De Grauwe, Galbraith, Eichengreen, Pagano, Piketty, Posen, Rodrik, Weber, Zucman and several well-known 🇩🇪 economists

people who know me IRL have mostly heard some variant of my inception thesis: the way to get an idea to catch on in these circles is that it has to make you *sound* clever when you repeat it without requiring any deeper knowledge.

Children to grow up in pleasant surroundings with good educational opportunities. Adults to be protected in sickness and adversity. Pensioners to take untroubled ease. Economist Arthur Lewis’s sketch of a socialist society. AKA woke nonsense.

In this last month I have made the mental transition from "air travel is very safe" to "at least it would be a relatively quick way to go"

It appears our entire national security apparatus is now owned by Vladimir Putin As Trump waxes poetic about Russia The Senate confirms Tulsi Gabbard-who spouts Russian talking points And Pete Hegseth sells out Ukraine This begs the question What will be the long term ramifications for NATO

Hegseth: "We must start by recognizing that returning to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective ... the US does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement."

One of my favourite thoughts from Engels, tragic though it is, from Socialism: Utopian and Scientific. "No nation will put up with production conducted by [monopoly firms], with so barefaced an exploitation of the community by a small band of dividend-mongers." Oh yes we will, as it happens.

In the trusts, freedom of competition changes into its very opposite — into monopoly; and the production without any definite plan of capitalistic society capitulates to the production upon a definite plan of the invading socialistic society. Certainly, this is so far still to the benefit and advantage of the capitalists. But, in this case, the exploitation is so palpable, that it must break down. No nation will put up with production conducted by trusts, with so barefaced an exploitation of the community by a small band of dividend-
mongers.
