Experts are concerned, as a number of scientists 🧪have recorded huge die-offs of insects in nature reserves around the world. The reported collapse of insect populations in supposedly protected regions is part of a newer phenomenon. 🌏🐜 Read more in @theguardian.com:

One of the easiest ways to create homes for insects is to avoid being too tidy. Letting a patch of grass grow long (good for nesting bumblebees), leaving dead stems in situ over winter, and having a wild corner will all help boost insect populations. More: bit.ly/4jGzo4f

Many arthropods are harmed by mowing management. However, mowing is ofter required to maintain species richness in high nature value grasslands. This is yet another case for phased mowing, of which Sinus mowing is a very nice example. Variation in mowing dates on landscape scale may also help.

📢New Paper about varied effects of #grassland mowing on #arthropod taxa. While #mowing generally reduces overall arthropod abundance, it has consistent negative (e.g. Diptera) or positive effects (e.g. Coleoptera) for some taxa. Mixed responses depend on factors like region, sampling, and management
