1/ "We try to embrace the full spectrum,” says Italian physicist and complexity scientist @ccattuto.bsky.social. In this new InterDialogue, Cattuto reflects on the evolution of computational social science and the interdisciplinary vision guiding his work as Scientific Director of @isi.it.
Excited about our new paper: Social interactions in isolated, confined, and extreme environments: A study of Antarctic winter teams using wearable sensors | PNAS www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... @andrea cantisani @jan schmutz team performance drops while loneliness or paranoia increase over time
New #SocioPatterns study in PNAS: we studied how social behavior and psychological well-being evolve at Concordia Station in Antarctica during the extreme isolation and confinement of a 10-month overwinter mission. Lessons for deep-space crews. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... #NetSci #NetworkScience

Last weekend I received the Troland Research Award from the @nationalacademies.org. I’m so grateful to the communities who made this work possible. It's strange to receive this award at a time when much of the work being recognized is not eligible for federal funding. My remarks 👇 and a 🧵>>

This is something I struggle with as a journalist who writes a lot about AI. I have written whole articles about how AI is a misnomer! But I feel powerless in the tides of linguistic drift. Has anyone else who writes about AI found ways to usefully (and regularly) distinguish types?
I wish, as an editorial practice, journalists would distinguish between scientific machine learning models and chatbots. Fk you Sam Altman.
Networks are #complex and their dynamics often look chaotic. But we can reconstruct latent spaces where their behavior becomes strikingly regular, revealing functional organization across biology, society and technology. How? 👉 rdcu.be/eSsqn 🧪🧠🦠🧬🌐 Kudos to Andrea, @dzanc.bsky.social & Sebastiano!
I wrote this piece at the start of the year, so it's nice to see it finally out before the year's end! It looks at the notion of "hard steps" in evolution that allegedly make intelligent life rare in the universe, and why that might not be correct after all. nautil.us/we-might-not...
