This is a truly terrible response to an already flawed paper & even more flawed editorial process, a microcosm of what is problematic about western academia. The reliance on fomalities is an exercise in what Tania Li termed 'rendering technical', the technocratic depoliticisation of events 1/3

I have made very good friends in this ‘island of strangers’. This is one the UK’s greatest strengths. It’s entire economy depends on such strangers working together & bonded by shared bafflement over separate hot & cold water taps, carpets in bathrooms & draughty buildings 1/2

Good article if you're curious about container ships. Great article if you're curious about traveling as a passenger on a container ship. Lots of fascinating smaller details about Filipino crew members, Russian officers, political tension, and more. Still looking for ethnographies on all this.

🚢 @jamesrball.com spent a week on a container ship. Vessels like the Timca are the unnoticed worker ants of our global economy, he writes. www.prospectmagazine...

Another great post by @reddmonitor.bsky.social showing the tight web of links between pro-offsetting conservationists, big finance & big polluters: a timber company owned by a bank founded by a Conservation Int'l board member is selling Microsoft offsets from covering savanna with eucalypts

Big Tech’s false solution to ever increasing greenhouse gas emissions? You guessed it, carbon credits

Inspiring presentation by Nauru ICJ highlighting that no single treaty or regime from which polluting states could withdraw can replace the general rules of international responsibility for climate change.

World Bank: Poor nations spend more money paying off debts to the countries that impoverished them ($1.4tn) than the amount of money they've asked for to combat climate change ($1.3tn). And remember: the paltry $300bn in finance announced at COP29 comes with strings attached.

World Bank: "Developing countries spent a record $1.4tn to service their foreign debt…in 2023…squeezing budgets of many…in critical areas such as health, education, & envt" Perspective on developing countries' unmet request at #COP29 for $1.3tn in annual climate finance…

The programme did perpetuate negative stereotypes of international students. It was racist & doesn’t reflect my experience as a former such student or current staff teaching cohorts of int students for 20 years.

A hat tip to @paulkenyontv.bsky.social - in the hands of many other presenters the issue could easily have ended blaming or demonising migrant students themselves, but that didn't happen. As several guests made clear, foreign students are exploited under this system. It is marketisation to blame.

Yes I was fuming but not for those reasons. It was sloppy journalism & failed to nuance or tackle the complexities of the system & added onto already negative stereotypes. bsky.app/profile/celi...

Anyone else been listening to #FileOn4 & absolutely fuming at the the scandal of university funding? Industrial scale exploitation of foreign students, used as cash cows with no regard for their plausible ability to complete the courses. International recruitment agencies raking in the profits...

I listened to this garbage so you don't have to. It is a horrifically one-sided, un-nuanced hit piece on international students that will do damage to universities & pile on racist abuse of vulnerable students. Shame on Jo Grady & @ucu.org.uk for contributing to this & adding to negative tropes 1/8
